Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Chemistry and laboratory experience through coursework or employment.

Position Summary:

This research position is for a laboratory that focuses on infectious disease and genomic technologies. The primary responsibility is laboratory management, including ordering supplies, preparation of media and solutions, and training and overseeing undergraduate workers who prepare media and solutions. There will also be some laboratory work that involves microbe culturing, DNA transformation, preparation of cell extracts, and molecular analysis.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

The candidate will work in a team environment. Demonstrated knowledge in basic biology, math, and laboratory skills. Demonstrated ability to work efficiently, and will be able to train others once the candidate becomes familiar with the techniques. Ability to efficiently communicate, both verbally and written.

Physical Demands:

Lift, climb, squat, and kneel, stand/sit for long periods. Work with animals. Wear personal protective equipment and use enhanced biosafety techniques.

Preparation of media and solutions. Maintaining inventories of chemicals and supplies. Complying with chemical and biohazard safety regulations.

Train undergraduates. Undergrads will be trained to perform basic lab maintenance tasks, such as cleaning glassware and making routine stock solutions.

Monitor lab equipment and place supply orders using UGAmart. Order chemicals and supplies for lab members. Schedule maintenance when needed for major equipment.
