Our community is a tight knit group of remarkable individuals interested in intellectual inquiry and making a difference in the world.

Requirements

Job Overview

This position is created both to lead cross-disciplinary research on technology law and policy issues across programs and institutions at the university, and to assist with curriculum development for students interested in technology law and policy.

This individual will conduct cross-disciplinary research that bridges across and connects the Institute for Tech Law & Policy and the Communications, Culture & Technology graduate program. In collaboration with faculty in both programs, the fellow will: conduct research on the intersection of law and technology, with a focus on privacy; produce scholarship related to their research; and consult with technologists and other scholars that are members of Georgetown's cross-disciplinary Tech & Society program and other scholars that are members of Georgetown's cross-disciplinary Tech & Society program to enhance their scholarship with technical sophistication. This research will support the Fritz Family Fellowship program's objectives of bridging various programs across the university, and of facilitating the creation of innovative and interdisciplinary tech policy scholarship.

This individual also will assist with curriculum development, including of Georgetown's cross-disciplinary tech offerings, and supervise Master's of Law and Technology (MLT) students. The MLT degree program requires close collaboration between the law school and the Communications, Culture & Technology program, and the fellow will assist in developing and supporting this cross-disciplinary collaboration, such as by advising MLT students and connecting the students to applied research opportunities within the University. The fellow also will supervise two or more MLT students in experiential learning opportunities hosted by the Institute for Tech Law & Policy and/or the tech clinics, in projects that include cross-disciplinary research and advocacy.

Work Interactions

The position will, for administrative purposes, report to the Executive Director of the Institute for Technology Law & Policy. This individual will reside in the tech clinics on the law campus so as to enable close collaboration with the faculty in those clinics, Laura Moy and Amanda Levendowski. The fellow also will collaborate with faculty at the law school as well as faculty in the Communications, Culture & Technology program in both their research and in curriculum development, and travel to Hilltop campus as necessary to assist in advising MLT students and consulting with CCT faculty.

In their day-to-day duties, the individual will work directly with MLT students, the directors of the Communications & Technology Law Clinic and the Intellectual Property and Information Policy Clinic, and students of the two clinics.

Requirements and Qualifications

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
  • Law degree required
  • At least 2 years of experience in tech law and policy, including privacy and communications law and policy
  • A rich understanding of tech policy key stakeholders, including in academia, government, and civil society
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills, and comfort using those skills in a variety of forms and settings
  • Exceptional reliability and work ethic
  • Creative thinker who thrives in a collaborative work environment, particularly across disciplines
  • Entrepreneurial and independent self-starter
  • Experience managing and supervising students in a practical setting
  • Experience teaching, with experience teaching in a law school clinic strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated record of academic scholarship and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research relating to technology law and policy

Familiarity with the technology-focused departments and faculty at Georgetown Law and the University as a whole strongly preferred
