Job Description:

ORGANIZATION RELATIONSHIPS:

Summary of Position
The Mills College Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE)-housed within the Office of the Provost and Dean of the Faculty-seeks a highly motivated and skilled Instructional Designer (Learning Designer) to join its digital learning team. The Provost's office partners with faculty to cultivate the intellectual life of Mills College, to ensure academic integrity and excellence, and to promote gender and racial justice. We do this by supporting the faculty in providing rigorous, transformative and inclusive learning experiences for our students, stewarding Mills' academic resources, and connecting the campus to the wider educational ecosystem.

Having significant experience and accomplishments in both instructional design and faculty development, the successful candidate will work collaboratively with faculty to design and develop courses and educational content. Whether a course is partially or 100% online, this individual supports the planning, designing, and developing of effective and engaging learning experiences; actively collaborates with individual faculty, programs, and departments to support their online and innovative learning needs; serves as an integral member of a digital learning team, and engages in learning design, multimedia learning, learning innovation, and learning technology and support across the college.

The Instructional Designer will guide and assist faculty subject matter experts with in-person and digital learning (blended, hybrid, hyflex, and fully online), course design, peer-to-peer and student-to-instructor engagement, inclusive design, and accessibility. The incumbent will develop and deploy learning content into well-organized instructional modules that employ supported, vetted and effective digital learning technology that includes Canvas, Zoom and Google Suite, while focusing on research-backed pedagogy and instructional strategies to encourage student engagement, knowledge acquisition and achievement of learning outcomes.

The successful candidate will be collaborative and diplomatic and capable of offering problem analyses and creative solutions and are skilled in working with instructors in higher education. A growth mindset and positive outlook and a genuine desire and ability to collaborate and work well with others are essential to working in the CFE.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

 

  • Collaborate with faculty subject matter experts to design in-person online, hybrid, hyflex, and flipped courses by performing a needs analysis and creating an instructional design plan.
  • Support faculty in incorporating proven online design and teaching strategies to advance inclusive excellence and sense of belonging for first generation students, students of color, LGBTQ students and other underrepresented students.
  • Edit and revise activities, materials, assignments, modules, and other content as needed to support improvement of existing online, hybrid/blended, and in-person courses.
  • Utilize course design plan to develop course content, including learning modules, activities, assessments, and instructional materials.
  • Guide faculty through the roles and responsibilities of an online instructor. Analyze course data with the instructor to revise and improve student learning outcomes in current and future course iterations.
  • Create and facilitate research-based professional development opportunities/programs for faculty, including individual consultation, online training materials, workshops, and seminars.
  • Research emerging educational technologies and best practices to improve educational outcomes and support the College's mission.
  • Apply professional instructional design skills to articulate course design, map learning outcomes to learning activities and assessments, and select vetted and approved appropriate technologies and tools to achieve course learning outcomes and promote learner engagement and knowledge acquisition.
  • Support faculty in the creation of asynchronous digital media content, including segmenting of traditional lecture content, ensuring its alignment with learning outcomes, and learning activities.
  • Deploy content on the Canvas learning management system via templates, and supports faculty in content implementation.
  • Work in a collaborative manner with the Associate Provost for Teaching, Learning, and Faculty Affairs, the Dean of Digital Learning, the Instructional Technology Administrator, and the other Instructional/Learning Designer to prioritize work assignments, conduct analysis, and develop recommendations.
  • Provide support for, research, and document copyright for embedded media and other non-faculty-created content.
  • Create engaging and effective learning activities and compelling course content in collaboration with faculty subject matter experts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

 


Requirements:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

 

  • Thorough knowledge of instructional design principles and learning strategies, including needs analysis, backwards design, learning outcomes and assessment design, and instructional approaches including lecture, discussion, activities, projects, etc.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Canvas learning management system specifically and video distribution platforms to achieve the delivery of engaging online learning content
  • High level of knowledge of the trends in the use and effectiveness of digital learning technology.
  • Experience in design of courses, content, and instructional strategies that are sustainable and can be easily replicated across a program for consistency.
  • Thorough analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with digital learning tools, Google Suite, PowerPoint, basic HTML/CSS, and project management applications.
  • Successful experience working with diverse faculty and student populations; ability to apply principles of cultural competence and cultural humility when working in a diverse context.
  • Knowledge of developing and implementing inclusive pedagogies, teaching for inclusive excellence, and equitable assessments.
  • Experience in developing, implementing and supporting successful faculty development programs regarding optimal instructional design and effective learning and teaching strategies.
  • Experience implementing nationally recognized standards of course design (e.g., Quality Matters, Online Learning Consortium, etc.).
  • Experience integrating adaptive learning software and products into higher education courses.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

 

  • Master's degree in instructional design, education, educational technology, curriculum and instruction, or a closely related field.
  • Two to three years of related higher education experience.
  • Knowledge of current research in teaching and learning specifically in relation to online and hybrid/blended instruction in higher education.
  • Knowledge of best practices in the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of learning environments.
  • Skill in developing and maintaining online course materials.
  • Ability to apply theoretical ideas and guiding principles of curriculum design to specific situations to identify the most appropriate solutions for a given educational challenge.
  • Demonstrated ability to advance equity and work collaboratively with individuals of diverse cultural, social, and educational backgrounds.
  • Commitment to Mills College's mission and demonstrated ability to create and sustain an organizational climate based on inclusion, social justice and equity.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

 

  • Experience designing and developing high quality online and hybrid/blended courses.
  • Demonstrated ongoing professional development and cultivation of professional network related to higher education, instructional design, and emerging research related to online teaching and learning.


KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

 

 

  • Thorough knowledge of instructional design principles and learning strategies, including needs analysis, backwards design, learning outcomes and assessment design, and instructional approaches including lecture, discussion, activities, projects, etc.
  • Strong analytical, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills; strong collaboration and negotiation skills; and the ability to work with diverse teams in a positive manner to accomplish shared goals.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment and manage projects, including the ability to juggle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

 

 


Additional Information:

This is a full-time, exempt position with an FTE of 1.0. Salary is commensurate with experience, ranging from $70K to $80K per year, and includes an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance, 403(b) retirement plan with college-matching after 6 month qualifying period, 10 days of vacation for year one, 15 days of vacation for years 2-10, and 22 days of vacation years 10+ plus, 12 sick days and 17 paid holidays (subject to annual review). Staff members also receive free admission to campus events, use of the pool, fitness center, and tennis courts. Tuition remission is also available after an introductory period. Voluntary benefits include: pet insurance, long-term care insurance, legal-assistance insurance, cellular provider discounts and computer hardware discounts.
