The Associate Director of University College within Undergraduate Studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington is part of a collaborative team promoting student success through the day-to-day management of a comprehensive academic advising and student engagement program. This position’s primary responsibility is the design, development, implementation, assessment, and evaluation of the advising and curricular efforts within University College. The Associate Director of University College reports to the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies & Director of University College and supports University College’s mission by developing and leading a comprehensive approach to strengthening university-wide retention and persistence goals and student success efforts within University College. Particular attention is focused on strategic retention goals for first-to-second year students, and transitioning University College students to other Academic units. In addition, the Associate Director works collaboratively with the Assistant Directors to support and manage all personnel issues and when needed involves the Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Studies and Director of University College. The Associate Director serves as a member of the Senior Leadership Team within University College and plays a vital role in developing and interpreting policies, developing systems-oriented methods to address workflow, goal setting, program level assessment, and operations and planning.

Minimum Requirements

•Master’s Degree and equivalent combination of training and experience necessary to perform the work is required
•Minimum of seven years of progressive responsibility in collegiate academic advising or student service setting

•Possess strong commitment to and advocacy of the liberal arts tradition through advising practices and curriculum & first-year program development.
•Program development, implementation and evaluation experience, strong attention to detail
•Must demonstrate strong data management and analytical skills and/or the ability to learn these skills quickly
•Must have experience or demonstrate the ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with the university community and work as an effective team member in a diverse work environment
•Demonstrated commitment to the highest ethical standards in leadership and administration

Preferred formal education, professional skills and work experience

•Ph.D. preferred, in counseling, higher education or a related field
•Demonstrated ability to apply current best practices in student development theory when developing/modifying policies and practices
•Demonstrated ability to apply student development and enrollment management theories, and current technological tools to contemporary advising practices
•Current experience with the use of data in advising; experience in data analytics software preferred
•Demonstrated experience in developing and executing program level assessment to support strategic initiatives.
•Demonstrated ability to develop and implement professional development experiences, aligned with the codified philosophy and curriculum of academic advising
•Demonstrated understanding of student learning process and curriculum and instructional design viewed through the lens of student development theory to support students in transitioning and adhering to the academic mission of the university.
•Teaching and/or course/classroom management experience within higher education
•Demonstrated skill in exceptional organizational and time management
•Demonstrated experience in effective project and/or program management
•Demonstrated skill in exceptional communication with on campus constituencies (e.g., staff, faculty, students, managers, etc.)

Primary purpose of the division, department, and/or grant

Undergraduate Studies is the central division for implementing the mission of the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Through effective academic policies, practices and programs, it provides leadership for excellence in teaching, scholarship and creative work as well as service to local, regional and global communities. The division allocates resources to recruit and retain faculty scholars and to create a learning environment that encourages students. As part of the University’s commitment to excellence in undergraduate education, the University College was created to provide academic advising and support to?UNCW?students from the time of their admission until they declare their major, which is usually in their sophomore year. The primary focus of the University College is to ensure that students: make a successful transition to?UNCW, are retained in good academic standing, and identify and declare an appropriate major. Through its advisors and academic support programs, the University College works with students in their formative semesters to assist them in developing their interests, skills and talents to the fullest extent.

College/School Information

The University College is the first academic home for over 3000 new first-year students each year. First-year students (including select transfer and military students) are advised in the University College until they declare a major or pre-major. The University College also administers the following academic programs and courses: Freshmen Seminar, Academic Learning Communities, and Synergy: The UNCW Common Reading program in addition to supporting students who are interested in Pre-Health and Pre-Law professions.
