Project Description

Brush Management Effects on Production and Quality of Pronghorn Forage
This research will compare forb community responses between methods of mechanical brush control. We are specifically interested in the effects on forb species important to pronghorn during nutritional stress periods (lactation and winter seasons). The project will compare composition of forb communities, forb production (biomass), and nutrient quality following treatment, as well as timing and intensity of pronghorn utilization of treated areas.

This position is dependent on extramural funding.

Job Description

-Sample forb biomass by species.
-Dry, prepare samples, and conduct nutritional analyses
-Collect, prepare, and analyze pronghorn fecal samples to determine pronghorn diets
-Conduct laboratory analyses appropriate to project timeframe
-Starts Fall 2020

-Large, private ranches near Barnhart, Marfa, and Marathon, TX.
-Sul Ross Range Animal Science Center labs, Alpine, TX.

-Vegetation ID skills preferred, but not required
-Desire to learn quantitative methods preferred
-Organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines
-Must be willing to work independently and as part of a team
-Must be a Texas resident
-Must be enrolled or admitted as a graduate student at SRSU
-GPA of ≥2.5
-GRE ≥290
20 hours per weekdation
