Position Description
The Texas Tech University (TTU) School of Veterinary Medicine (the School) is seeking to fill a faculty position to provide clinical expertise toward teaching, research, and service needs of an exciting, innovative, and fully funded new veterinary education program located in Amarillo, TX. The new School will be first veterinary educational program established in Texas in a century. It is specifically focused on the veterinary medical and educational needs of rural and regional communities of Texas, and to provide access to affordable education.

Applications are welcomed beginning June 1, 2020 (see below for instructions on how to apply). Application packages will be reviewed semi-weekly and candidates will be invited for interviews when the review of packages indicates that an adequate pool of candidates have applied.

Major/Essential Functions
  • Contribute to the School’s instruction, scholarship, and service activities. The distribution of effort toward each activity will be individualized for each faculty member and outlined in the letter of appointment.
  • It is expected that faculty members will establish extramural support of their scholarship and this will include support for graduate students and opportunities for involvement of professional students. This expectation is proportional to percentage of effort assigned to scholarship in the letter of appointment.
  • Contribute to activities necessary to receive accreditation from the AVMA COE, other regulatory or accreditation approvals, and admit and deliver the curriculum to the inaugural (and subsequent) cohort of students of the professional program.
  • Curriculum development and related activities.
  • The curriculum framework has been developed based on Competency Based Veterinary Education (CBVE; see, and is designed to be both vertically and horizontally integrated.
  • Curriculum development will require proactive and constructive teamwork to effectively develop course syllabi and content to achieve integration and curricular outcomes.
  • Curriculum mapping of course-specific learning objectives against curricular outcomes.
  • Delivery of the curriculum within the professional program. This includes serving as instructor of record where appropriate and participating in lectures/laboratories in other courses.
  • Until such time that it is necessary to create departments (or department-like structures) within the School, the successful candidates will report to the Senior Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs.
  • Participation on various School committees.
  • The successful candidates will be expected to foster a values-based environment within the School, and to develop collegial relationships with faculty, staff and students at TTU and the TTUHSC, and other institutions as appropriate.
  • Additional comments:
  • The curriculum is centered around general veterinary practice in rural and regional communities. A central function of subject-matter experts (e.g., Small Animal Internal Medicine), is to provide instruction such that graduates can competently and confidently practice veterinary medicine at distance from referral hospitals.
  • The successful candidates will be expected to engage with clinical partners and wildlife stakeholders to achieve the Schools instruction, scholarship and service mission areas. The candidate will also provide instruction through on-campus classroom and teaching laboratory settings.

  • Required Qualifications
    Terminal degree or advanced training leading to expertise in wildlife medicine with a specific focus on production medicine and management of Texas wildlife populations is required. Expertise may be demonstrated with a PhD in a relevant field of study, a DVM (or equivalent) degree with advanced training and/or related work experience, or board certification (ACZM). Preference is given to those with experience working in rural and regional communities.

    Preference will be given to candidates who have a successful track record of teamwork, student supervision, scholarship, and service. The successful candidates must share and foster the School’s core values; annual evaluation of faculty includes evaluation of academic performance as well as contribution to fostering the School’s core values. Adaptability, persistence, and resilience will be important attributes for success in the evolving dynamics that are characteristic of a developing program.
