The Department of Medical Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has a rewarding opportunity for a tenure track faculty position to focus on ultrasound physics. We seek an individual who has a particular interest in quantitative ultrasound research thematically focused on parameters derived from the backscattered echo signal, elasticity imaging techniques (in particular shear wave elasticity imaging), and molecular imaging with ultrasound. The selected candidate will collaborate closely with researchers in Medical Physics, in particular the Quantitative Ultrasound Lab, whose expertise in acoustics theory, experimental techniques, and development and calibration of phantoms for testing these techniques as a resource for scientific exploration with a broad range of potential applications.

Together with our clinical colleagues, we advance state-of-the-art patient care by developing, validating, and translating to the clinical environment novel imaging systems, minimally invasive, personalized treatments, and early treatment assessment.

We are seeking applicants at the Assistant Professor level with expertise in quantitative ultrasound research thematically focused on parameters derived from the backscattered echo signal, elasticity imaging techniques (in particular shear wave elasticity imaging), and molecular imaging with ultrasound.
It is expected that the successful applicant will have a broad knowledge base in ultrasound physics and ultrasound imaging systems, including:
a. efficient methods for data acquisition using clinical imaging systems,
b. signal processing strategies for minimum bias and variance in power spectral estimation,
c. the approximations used in much of quantitative ultrasound, how those approximations are often violated, and strategies to test those approximations and mitigate their impact on parameter estimation,
d. extensive experience with relevant laboratory acoustics equipment for materials characterization,
e. basic methods for using ultrasound contrast agents including targeting for theranostics and molecular tagging for monitoring physiological function.
We will also consider applications from established Principle Investigators for the Associate Professor level. Candidates for Associate Professor rank must meet criteria for appointment at rank per UW School of Medicine and Public Health guidelines for appointment and promotion on the tenure track.
