About the Department:

Our role in the community-wide shared responsibility for safety on campus is to provide professional law enforcement, effective emergency response, crime & incident reduction and community outreach & education.

Essential Job Duties:

Police Officer duties include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Preventing and suppressing crime
  • Protecting life and property
  • Applying appropriate use of force options
  • Pursuing fleeing suspects
  • Performing rescue operations
  • Preparing reports
  • Identifying significant crime trends
  • Determining reasonable suspicion to detain and probable cause to arrest
  • Engaging in community and problem oriented policing strategies
  • Operating law enforcement vehicle,
  • Willing to work day and night shift assignments and communicate effectively with the public.

Other Responsibilities:

All selected candidates will have to undergo an extensive background investigation, psychological testing, EQI Testing (emotional intelligence), polygraph examination, medical examination, physical fitness testing (POPAT), drug and TB testing, and FBI fingerprint criminal check.

Minimum Experience/Education:

High school diploma or equivalency.

Certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment. Additional Education and Experience are necessary for progressive level(s).

Other Required Qualifications:

Completion of the North Carolina Basic Law Enforcement Training program or are otherwise eligible for in-state or out-of-state transfer.

Out-of-state police officer transfer applicants must have at least 2 years of full-time, sworn law enforcement experience.

Transfer candidates must have successfully completed a Basic Law Enforcement Training course accredited by the state of transfer to be considered for lateral entry.

In-state police officer transfers must be currently certified as a law enforcement officer in the state of NC or be eligible for the 96 hour program, which includes passing the state exam in its entirety.

Out-of-state transfers cannot have a break in service from the out of state agency of more than one year.

Candidates eligible for out of state transfer will have to complete 96 hours (or more) of training to be eligible for NC Certification and pass the state exam.

Must be able to wear and use personal protective equipment.

Applicants must successfully pass the North Carolina Police Officer Physical Abilities Test (POPAT) prior to final offer of employment and must be able to pass the POPAT semiannually as a condition of employment.

All new hires and transfers from other agencies must serve a 12 month probationary period.

Preferred Qualifications:

An associate’s degree or higher education level is preferred for this position.

80 percent score on annual firearms qualification strongly preferred.

Successful completion of military police training program and awarded military police occupational specialty rating.
