The Chief Audit Officer (CAO) is the lead organizational audit official reporting to the Audit, Risk, and Compliance Committee of the Board of Trustees, with administrative reporting to the Chancellor. The CAO is a high-level independent executive with overall responsibility for the internal audit function, with a focus on adding value to and improving the institution’s operations, risk management, and compliance. This position serves as an advisor and resource to the University’s senior management, providing strategic audit and risk assessment across the institution, and building and leading an office that provides internal audit best practices in accordance with the professional standards of the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) and the Association of College and University Auditors (ACUA). The CAO supervises professional audit staff and an intern, and provides mentoring, training opportunities, and other development for the staff and intern.

Minimum Requirements

1. Post-baccalaureate degree or Advanced degree with a minimum of three years or greater of related professional experience;

2. OR a Baccalaureate degree in accounting or discipline related to the program area, nine credit hours of accounting coursework and equivalent combination of training and experience.

*Solid technical skills and knowledge in relevant fields including, but not limited to, auditing, accounting, financial reporting, and compliance.

*Demonstrated ability to establish credibility with all constituencies.
*Experience related to enterprise risk management and compliance programs.

Preferred formal education, professional skills and work experience

*Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), and/or Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) are preferred licensures.

*Background in higher education.

Primary purpose of the division, department, and/or grant

The Office of Internal Audit provides independent, objective assurance and consulting services designed to add value and improve UNCW’s operations. Internal Audit assists UNCW in accomplishing its objectives by bringing a systematic, disciplined approach to evaluate and improve the effectiveness of risk management, control, and governance processes.

The Office of Internal Audit supports the mission of the University by partnering with University Management and assisting the Board of Trustees, through the Audit, Risk, and Compliance Committee, in the effective discharge of their responsibilities to protect the assets and reputation of the University and to promote operational effectiveness and efficiency.

The Office of Internal Audit conducts audits, consultations, and investigations related to all university entities, systems, and functions in accordance with an annual plan of coverage based on an institution-wide risk assessment. Internal Audit also coordinates audit activities with the Internal Audit staff at the UNC System Office and with the Office of the State Auditor.
