The department of Engineering Systems and Environment in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, University of Virginia is currently accepting applications for a Post-doctoral Research Associate to work in the Sensing Systems for Health (S2He ) Lab, directed by Laura Barnes, Associate Professor and Mehdi Boukhechba, Assistant Professor.

The Candidate is expected to engage in ongoing research activities within the S2He Lab, but also expected to develop new areas of research that build from current lab activities. Evidence of producing high-quality publishable research in smart health and strong experience in all of the following areas is a must: statistics, machine learning, reinforcement learning, and data science methods for handling diverse health data sets, design of ubiquitous computing technologies for health and wellness, and conducting user studies in the natural daily life environments of the study participants.

QUALIFCATION REQUIRMENTS: A Ph.D. degree in Systems Engineering, Computer, or closely related field is required by the start date. Preference will be given to individuals with expertise and experience in mobile passive and active sensing, reinforcement learning, and machine learning as it applies to the field of mobile health.

Additional required skills include:

  • Experience in development of mobile sensing applications and platform using object oriented programming languages such as c# and Java.
  • Strong background in statistical analysis and data mining using R and python.
  • Familiarity in survey design using mobile ecological momentary assessments.
  • Knowledge in human subjects research study designs.
  • Experience working with clinicians and health data.

The successful candidate is detail oriented, self-motivated, creative, and dependable. He/she is an effective communicator, and will work directly with the PI and engage in supervising current graduate and undergraduate students in the S2He Lab. The candidate must be able to work in a team environment and meet project goal deadlines.
