Departmental Overview

The College of Environmental Design (CED) is comprised of faculty, students and staff with an impressive set of backgrounds and talents. We believe in the importance of supporting an inclusive environment that values community and builds its strength from a diversity of views and expertise. There are approximately 50 faculty, 1000 undergraduate and graduate majors, and approximately 50 total staff.  The college budget is approximately $28M.  CED is a multifaceted academic unit, with three departments (architecture, city & regional planning, and landscape architecture & environmental planning); undergraduate, professional graduate and doctoral programs; a suite of highly regarded summer design institutes; widely recognized environmental design archives; extensive computing and fabrication facilities; several administrative and student affairs departments; and a building with auditoria, classrooms, studios, labs, research centers, library, and a cafe.

Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Human Resources, the Academic HR Analyst 3 is a seasoned professional who administers all phases of department-level academic recruitment, appointment and advancement for senate faculty, lecturers, specialists, visitors and librarians in the College of Environmental Design, which consists of ~50 faculty, ~50 staff, and ~1000 undergraduate and graduate students in three academic departments. The person in this role provides confidential academic personnel support for Department Chairs and Department Managers in the College, and is responsible for preparing academic cases for all 3 departments for submission to the Dean's Office. Responsibilities include:
  • Managing academic review processes (50%): Preparing and analyzing faculty, librarian, endowed chair merit and promotion cases from academic departments; managing the academic personnel process for ladder rank faculty, visiting professors, zero FTE, adjunct appointments, and lecturers; and making recommendations to faculty and department chair, as appropriate.
  • Administering all phases of the faculty recruitment process (15%): Coordinating the academic search process, including placement of ads, drafting search plans, conducting the initial screening of materials submitted, coordinating correspondence with outside parties and reviewers, and preparing the resulting appointment cases (including the Affirmative Action Report).
  • Maintaining records and transactions (10%): Creating and maintaining UCPATH records for college faculty, tracking cases, and coordinating any necessary payroll transactions with payroll personnel.
  • Providing strategic advice and counsel to department chairs and managers by analyzing and interpreting system-wide and campus policies, collective bargaining agreements, academic personnel procedures and practices; as well as consulting with the Dean's Office and the Academic Personnel Office on various issues and processes. (5%)
  • Counseling Senate and non-Senate faculty and other academic staff concerning moderate to complex or particularly sensitive work- or career-related problems. (5%)
  • Analyzing and interpreting guidelines and policies to provide advice and counsel to college clients on issues such as compensation, work-eligibility (visa) matters such as J-1, H1-B processing or PR application, and benefits considerations. (5%)
  • Assisting faculty, department chairs, and department managers with specialist, visiting professor, and other non-senate appointment preparations. (5%)
  • Coordinating other tasks involving academic personnel, which may include APM 025 reporting, recruiting reporting, reporting regarding visiting appointees, sabbatical requests, sabbatical reporting, etc. (5%)

Required Qualifications

 
    Excellent critical and innovative thinking to address complex issues and present nuanced analyses. Ability to analyze complex management issues; develop project scope and solutions, give professional advice to senior officials and make critical decisions regarding personnel. Excellent interpersonal skills to be able to work with a wide range of staff and faculty, as well as communicate effectively on complex issues.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Requires in-depth knowledge of and ability to apply/interpret systemwide, campus, and college policies and procedures which govern academic HR.
  • Thorough knowledge of campus and college goals, priorities and values and the legal and human implications of decisions.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

The salary range designated for this position is $70,000 - 80,000; however, salary is commensurate with experience.
