The work will primarily focus on collecting and reviewing soil and water quality data, as well as irrigation and crop yield data from partners in the Bazile Ground Water Management Area in Northeast Nebraska, as well as from other critically affected areas. Additionally, collaboration will be sought with crop consultants, agricultural dealerships, and lenders to understand the farming practices in the state. The main goals the applicant will be expected to address include:
• Review existing agrichemical data from the clearing house which have been collected by various agencies in the state (https://clearinghouse.nebraska.gov/Clearinghouse.aspx).
• Collect and compile other data from state and local government collaborators (pumpage, yield, etc.).
• Review the vadose zone data for nitrate, ammonium, and other species available at the Nebraska Water Center.
• Understand the typical farming practices employed by farmers in the region where collaborators are located.
• Get annual crop area data from USDA and other sources.
• Work with the High Plains Regional Climate Center at the University of Nebraska for assessing their measured climatic and soil moisture data.
• Conduct simulations of crop growth and moisture and nitrate/ammonium transport using appropriate models.
• Organize and analyze data in order to prepare manuscripts based on these modifications.
• Participate in ongoing projects at the Nebraska Water Center and provide support as needed.
• Demonstrate interpersonal skills in a professional setting.
• Be willing to travel in or out of state for scientific conferences, to network and collaborate with colleagues.
• Present findings at regional or national meetings.

Minimum Required Qualifications

Ph.D. in Soil Science, Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences or a related engineering/science field with a strong emphasis on biophysics, data analysis, numerical methods and modeling is required.

Preferred Qualifications

•Experience with Midwestern agriculture is strongly preferred.
•Familiarity with corn and soybean farming practices with irrigation under a Midwestern setting.
•Quantitative data analysis and management skills.
•Background in: agricultural/civil engineering, agronomy, soil physics, or earth and atmospheric sciences.
•Demonstrated experience with crop and soil models.
•Experience with numerical modeling and data analysis software such as R, SAS or Matlab.
