Job DutiesDuties may include the following, but will be dependent upon the specific course(s) to which the Teaching Associate is assigned, as well as upon the specific needs of the faculty member(s) in charge of the course(s) and the needs of the Physics Department:

~Perform laboratory instruction for one or more course offerings

~Prepare course materials, e.g. syllabus, organizational set-up of lab materials or quizzes in consultation with Physics Department faculty

~ Record all grades in electronic and paper forms. Submit grades to Department office and to laboratory manager on or before the deadlines set by the Physics Department.consultation with Physics Department faculty

~Grade laboratory reports and quizzes according to the guidelines set up by the Physics Department faculty

~Grade homework assignments for lower division courses offered by the Physics Department

~Create a laboratory and tutoring environment that is conducive to learning

~Make assignments to students

~Conduct tutoring sessions for students enrolled in lower division courses offered by the Physics Department

~Show responsiveness to improvement suggestions from faculty or student evaluations of instructional performances

~Attend T.A. orientation sessions at the beginning of each semester

~Attend weekly meetings scheduled by the laboratory manager for purposes of briefing, coordination, and discussion of course content

~Attend appropriate safety training sessions and ensure that the students in laboratory sessions are following safety procedures

~Assist with departmental assessment activities when requested

~Perform other assignments supportive of university instruction

~Operate in a collegial fashion with members of the Physics Department and with other university employees

Minimum QualificationsA candidate for the position of Teaching Associate in the Physics Department must meet the following minimum qualifications:

~Bachelor's degree in Physics

~Enrollment as a graduate student in the Physics Department

~Mastery of the subject matter of the courses taught

~Good oral and written communication skills

~Ability to provide effective instruction in a laboratory or tutoring environment

~if the T.A. is a new student, they must be admitted to the MS program in the Physics Department with at least conditional classified graduate status

~If the T.A. is not a new student, they must maintain a 3.0 GPA, be enrolled in coursework toward their graduate degree, and demonstrate satisfactory progress toward completion of their graduate degree

~Willingness to perform multiple tasks and to take guidance from the faculty member(s) or laboratory manager associated with the course.
