The Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences (CDS) is an interdisciplinary academic unit comprising scholars and researchers who are solely appointed in that unit as well as faculty with joint appointments in various schools and colleges at BU. CDS mission is to be a catalyst for synergy and integration of research and education programs in computing and data sciences across the landscape of academic disciplines at BU. Founded in 2019 and housed in an iconic 19-story building to be completed in 2022, CDS complements and connects traditional academic disciplines through the language of computation and data. In support of the University's strategic goals, CDS is laying the foundation for promoting innovation-driven and civic-minded computing through thematic Impact Labs that act as catalysts for maximizing the real-world impact of its research, curricular, and co-curricular programs. Anchored in CDS, BU Spark! serves as a technology incubator and as an engine that develops and propels experiential learning programs and interdisciplinary computational and data-driven projects at BU. BU Spark! currently engages hundreds of students annually in a variety of ways, including the Spark! Innovation Fellowship and the Spark! eXperience Lab (X-Lab). BU Spark! is set to extend its model in support of CDS Impact Labs and co-Labs.

Reporting to the Director of Administration in the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences (CDS), the CDS Financial Manager oversees and supports all the financial processes related to the programmatic and administrative operations of the unit, including the annual budgeting process, ongoing financial administrative transactions, budget reconciliations and confirmations, as well as student hiring and payroll.

Required Skills

We seek a flexible and detail-oriented individual who is able to work both independently and be part of a team in an exciting new interdisciplinary academic unit. The role requires exceptional organizational skills as well as enjoy working closely with young people and faculty from across the University. This CDS Financial Manager will manage the strategic and day-to-day financial operations for CDS and its programs and will be responsible for budget development and reporting, transaction management, hiring and payroll, finances associated with student initiatives and interdepartmental collaborations. This role will also have an opportunity to contribute to the creation of financial systems to enable seamless management of multi-lateral collaborations involving faculty and programs that span the academic landscape at BU.

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Ability to provide advice, problem solve, and interact with individuals at all levels
  • Budget development and oversight experience
  • Advanced skills in excel or equivalent budgeting tools
  • Strong financial management skills •Outstanding communication and people skills; proactive and responsive communicator
  • Proficiency with productivity and database software
  • Ability to develop shadow budget systems that translates and tracks transaction level data into program and initiative-level budget views
  • Ability to arrive at creative solutions, within the framework of university policies and protocols, in order to accommodate the unique and non-traditional needs of a large, complex academic unit focused on interdisciplinary computing and data sciences
  • Patient and empathic approach to communicating with and managing students with hiring, payroll, and financial transactions
  • Must have comfort working in a fast-paced, dynamic work setting. Flexibility a must.
  • Basic IT skills (databases, MS Office, etc.)

Preferred Skills

Knowledge of CRM platforms and associated operational processes (e.g. Salesforce)
