Opportunities and challenges
The University of Ottawa’s bold and ambitious new strategic plan, Transformation 2030, puts internationalization and the Francophonie at the centre of its aspirations. The creation of this vice-presidency is part of the University’s commitment to achieving this dual objective. The incumbent’s first challenge will be to ensure that the entire University collaborates to further this objective. The person selected to fill this position will create synergies by rallying the University’s senior management team and all its academic and administrative units. These synergies will lead to innovative projects and programs that will bolster the University’s reputation and ranking.
This vice-presidency will also lead the University’s internationalization efforts and strengthen ties with Francophone communities in Ontario and across Canada to expand and develop these communities in close cooperation with their stakeholders. Finally, the initiatives and policies put forth by the University will need to be reflected in the full development of the Francophone and international dimensions of its own internal programs and activities.
Reporting to the President, the Vice-President, International and Francophonie will play a key part in achieving the University’s internationalization goals and in fulfilling its historic role of supporting and contributing to the expansion and success of the Franco-Ontarian community, as mandated in its founding legislation. Moreover, these goals are reflected in the priorities the University has stated in its new strategic plan, Transformation 2030.
The incumbent will collaborate with several stakeholders and establish partnerships with university, public, and private sector representatives in Francophone communities in Ontario, Canada and around the world, and with other international stakeholders as well.
Key Experience and Competencies
Knowledge and experience
- Experience in and knowledge of the Canadian university sector
- A solid reputation and credibility within academia based on a wealth of experience in university teaching and research
- Knowledge and understanding of the range of disciplines and programs within a major research university
- Strategic vision and inspirational leadership, coupled with a proven ability to nurture solid relationships, foster collaboration, and mobilize stakeholders and colleagues through innovation and community engagement
- Proven and varied experience in initiating and implementing international cooperation programs and international partnerships
- Relevant knowledge of, and experience in, the Francophonie and its diversity and international potential
- Knowledge of Francophone populations in Canada, especially in minority settings and particularly in Ontario, coupled with relevant experience
Skills and personal suitability
- Proven talent for designing and implementing programs that require collaboration between various stakeholders
- Excellent negotiation and teamwork skills
- Tact, diplomacy and political savvy
- Passionate commitment to the Francophonie and to the University of Ottawa’s mission to support Francophone communities in Ontario, in Canada, and around the world
- Significant commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, coupled with the desire to create a work environment based on inclusion, respect, and recognition
- Superior communication and interpersonal skills
- Perfect mastery of written and spoken French and a high level of bilingualism (with knowledge of other languages considered an asset)
