Job Details

University of Denver Golf Club at Highlands Ranch is an 18-hole, semi-private golf club featuring a Hale Irwin designed championship golf course. The course, which opened in 1998, features a great variety of immaculately groomed holes. The 7,179 yard, par 72 layout boasts expansive bentgrass greens that many say are the best in the region. The University of Denver Golf Club is a part of the Division of Athletics & Recreation of the University of Denver.

The University of Denver has a proud athletic tradition that compliments the schools academic endeavors. In its history, DU has won 32 national championships and enables student-athletes to compete on 17 Division 1 teams. The Pioneers pursue championships, excel academically, and represent both the University and their respective conferences to the best of their abilities.

Essential Functions

  • Assists in planning, coordinating, supervising the maintenance of the golf course, tees, fairways, greens, seeding and maintenance for the golf course, planting, cultivating, pruning, caring for plants, shrubs and trees; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicides and pest control methods and materials; drainage controls and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps, and automated controls.
  • Assists in the scheduling and routing of personnel and equipment to accomplish daily work.
  • Inspects the golf course property and related areas to evaluate how well management standards are being achieved and to effect changes in management programs.
  • Enforces safety standards and regulations and instructs and trains employees in the proper handling and application of chemicals to ensure the safety of the public, employees, wildlife and property.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, percentages.
  • Familiarity with financial concepts such as budget development.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization may exist.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, or schedule form.

Required Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of the maintenance of the golf course, tees, fairways, greens, the seeding and maintenance for the golf course, planting, cultivating, pruning, caring for plants, shrubs and trees; the characteristics and proper use of various fertilizers and soil conditioners; herbicides and pest control methods and materials; drainage controls and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps, and automated controls
  • Ability to supervise maintenance work to achieve the most efficient utilization or workers and equipment; prepare concise reports; maintain effective employee and public relations
  • Chemical Applicators License
  • Knowledge of agronomy and turfgrass management practices

    Please note, this position will also require a valid Colorado drivers license and insurable by the University of Denvers insurance carrier.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-3 years experience as a Golf Course Assistant Superintendent

Working Environment

An employee in this job is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions, occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, toxic or caustic chemicals, and has a risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment may be loud.

Physical Activities

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to hold or feel, reach with hands and arms, walk, talk, smell and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, sit, climb, balance, stoop, crouch and crawl. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision, and depth perception. The employee regularly lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 100 pounds.

Work Schedule
Must be available to work weekends.

Salary Range:
Salary will be determined by the qualifications of the selected candidate balanced with departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.
