Job Summary:
The Academic and Bar Exam Success (ABES) Program at USF Law School offers comprehensive support services to help all students succeed in law school, in legal practice, and on the bar exam. The program has two Directors, one that focuses on academic foundations, especially in the first and second years of law school and with an emphasis on building foundational academic and legal skills, and the other that focuses on bar success. The two Directors work closely together to develop and implement the overall ABES program. We are currently looking to fill the Co-Director of ABES (Academic Foundations) position.

The Co-Director of ABES (Academic Foundations) and Assistant Professor position serves all law students by providing a comprehensive 1L and 2L legal and academic skills program and by working with the other Co-Director of ABES (Bar Success) to link that program to professional and bar success, including working with the Co-Director of ABES to assist students in a bar boot camp prior to the bar examination. The Co-Director of ABES (Academic Foundations) will stay abreast of research on learning theory and academic and legal skills teaching and will design and implement a program starting in the first year and coordinating with the other co-Director of ABES (Bar Success) through the third year. The Co-Director of ABES (Academic Foundations) will teach workshops and at least one academic skills or possibly doctrinal course, will manage tutors and graders, and will also meet with and counsel individual students in academic difficulty.

Full Job Description:

Job Responsibilities
  • Develops Academic Foundations program that may include workshops and courses
  • Teaches workshops and at least one academic skills course
  • Provides one-on-one academic support counseling to students
  • Provides individualized feedback on writing assignments and trains and manages tutors and graders to do the same
  • Keeps abreast of research on learning theory and academic and legal skills teaching
  • Works cooperatively with the faculty to implement key measures in courses across the curriculum
  • Helps Co-Director of ABES with essay grading during the academic year, as time permits, and serves as back-up to Co-Director of ABES for bar success workshops
  • Works with the Co-Director of ABES to connect academic foundations skills to professional and bar pass success, including assisting the Co-Director of ABES in a boot camp prior to the bar exam


Requirements
  • JD Required
  • CA Bar Exam preferred
  • Experience in and/or aptitude for providing academic support in a higher education setting
  • Demonstrated aptitude for thinking programmatically
  • Strong analytic writing and reading comprehension skills
  • Experience in and/or potential to succeed in teaching to small and large groups
  • Aptitude for partnering with others (including faculty) to coordinate and strengthen connections throughout curriculum
  • Ability to track and use student metrics and data to drive decision-making and program improvements
  • Demonstrated leadership ability
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to work with diverse population
