About the David and Lucile Packard Foundation
The David and Lucile Packard Foundation (Foundation) is a family foundation located in Los Altos, California. The Foundation is guided by the enduring business philosophy and personal values of Lucile and David Packard, who helped found one of the world's leading technology companies. Their approach to business and community participation has guided our philanthropy for over 50 years. Today, their children and grandchildren continue to help guide the work of the Foundation. The Foundation makes grants at the local, state, national, and international level.

The Foundation works on the issues that their founders cared about most, which are: improving the lives of children; enabling the creative pursuit of science; advancing reproductive health; conserving and restoring the earth's natural systems; and supporting and strengthening an array of local nonprofit organizations. A staff of 130 conducts the day-to-day operations and a Board of Trustees oversees the work of the Foundation. David and Lucile Packard passed on the following core set of values: integrity; respect for all people; belief in individual leadership; commitment to effectiveness; and the capacity to think big.

About the Children, Families, and Communities Program
The foundations for a lifetime of health and learning are built in the first five years of a child's life, and adults are key to making these foundations strong.

When adults know how to support a child's healthy development and can create experiences for learning, children grow up with the curiosity and confidence they need to succeed in school and life. Many different adults matter to a child's growth—from parents to child care providers, educators, and health care professionals. They all play an important role in nurturing a child's development, learning, and health.

We can help children have a strong start in life by ensuring that all the adults in their lives are equipped with the best information, coaching, resources, and support they need to help the children in their care grow and thrive.

We aim to:
  • Improve training and professional development for child care providers and educators so they can support children's learning and growth.
  • Provide parents, family, and friends that care for children with the skills and support they need to create nurturing environments for children.
  • Ensure all children and their families have access to and can afford quality health care and health insurance coverage.

About the Partnership
The UC Berkeley-Haas School of Business (through the Center for Social Sector Leadership) offers this unique fellowship in philanthropy at the David and Lucile Packard Foundation to provide next generation leaders the opportunity to engage with philanthropic and nonprofit leaders and work with a grantmaking team serving diverse issues and populations in the CFC program.

The vision for this partnership is to strengthen the future of philanthropy and civil society by providing recent graduates from diverse disciplines and backgrounds a professional-level introduction to philanthropy and the nonprofit sector. The goals of the fellowship are to 1) introduce recent graduates to philanthropy and the role of nonprofits to strengthen their impact in a future career and 2) introduce the Foundation to fresh ideas, new skills, and diverse perspectives.

The position will support the Foundation's strategic planning, grantmaking, research, and monitoring, evaluation and learning for the CFC program. This position will take day-to-day direction from a program officer in the CFC program.

The fellow will join a cohort of six other fellows at the Foundation placed in the portfolios of Conservation & Science, Population and Reproductive Health, and Organizational Effectiveness. There will be quarterly activities for the cohort of fellows.

While placed at the Packard Foundation and receiving day-to-day supervision from a program officer there, the fellow will also enjoy full support from UC Berkeley-Haas School of Business' Founder and Faculty Director of the Center for Social Sector Leadership. The Berkeley supervisor will provide context for the foundation world, access to resources for fellowship success, and personal coaching and supervision for the fellow. Since the purpose of the fellowship is to develop leaders, the fellowship also includes a professional development budget for the fellow to attend early childhood health and education, and philanthropy conferences, take relevant workshops and seminars, receive professional career coaching, and develop specific skills and knowledge particular to the fellow's next career goal.
