General Overview:


The Principal Gifts Officer, University of Miami Health System & Miller Medical School, reports directly to the Associate Vice President, Development and Donor Relations with a dotted line to the Vice President of Medical Development and Alumni Relations.

1. Understand the mission and philanthropic priorities of the University of Miami Health System and Miller Medical School
2. Build and strategically steward a portfolio of donors made up primarily of grateful patients and manage the pipeline of activities to cultivate, steward and solicit principal gift prospects in-line with industry best practices.
3. Develop principal giving opportunities in line with University of Miami Health System and Miller Medical School philanthropic priorities.
4. Align donor interest with philanthropic priorities by clearly articulating the vision, research needs and clinical care priorities to grateful patients.
5. Develops and nurtures effective working relationships with physicians and other senior leaders in close coordination with other medical major gift officers.
6. Partner with major gift officers across the University system to support the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of $1M plus gifts to healthcare related priorities within medical or University wide.
7. Be a collaborative partner across the University building bridges between major gift colleagues to support the development of principal gift level opportunities.
8. Work closely with senior-level university personnel to maximize giving to support university initiatives.

Essential Responsibilities:
• Track major gift prospects through the cultivation, solicitation and stewardship cycle by reviewing timely and appropriate moves on donor/prospects and inputting into Development database. Determine and update information regarding cultivation and solicitation status, ratings, and strategies. Ensure proper donor, prospect follow-up and next steps are set.
• Identify, qualify, engage, cultivate, solicit and steward, high-level prospects and donors at the major giving and principal giving level. Maintain a portfolio agreed upon with supervisor, and maximize solicitations personally, or in collaboration with, development officers. Cultivate and steward these high-capacity individuals for annual and campaign priorities. Proactively identify and engage in strategic networking opportunities to garner introductions to new prospects.
• Support any gift officer to engage, cultivate, solicit and steward high-level prospects.
• In coordination with the Associate Vice President to engage with the University’s Board of Trustees and other volunteer groups to forge and foster relationships with the goal of facilitating philanthropy towards supporting the University’s initiatives.
• Collaborate with University Administration, Academic Leadership, Development Leadership, Community Relations, Government Affairs, and the schools/colleges to identify strategic projects that can increase the University’s fundraising dollars; strategically develop these opportunities into full fundraising projects, with timelines, identified prospect pools, budgets, cases for support and fundraising action plans.
• Reach individual yearly goals by making an appropriate amount of substantive cultivation and solicitation actions toward closing gifts; reach additional goals by acting as a collaborator. (Individual metrics established with supervisor.)
• Develop and implement an annual Principal Giving Plan with measurable objectives and courses of action for all relevant transformative gifts and prospective donors under management.
• Set benchmarks and monitor progress of all transformative gift solicitations under direct management; evaluate the strategic plan for outcomes, satisfaction levels and improvement opportunities. Make recommendations regarding future strategies by using cost-benefit analysis, and overall fundraising success.
• Participate in strategic planning, budget development, policy decisions, and goal setting at a leadership level.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor's Degree in a related field and at least 10 years of demonstrated successful professional development and/or fundraising related experience, preferably in healthcare, higher education or other academic setting combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skill and abilities have been achieved, are welcome and will be considered.
• Previous academic medical or other related healthcare experience preferred; and/or demonstrated ability to close principal gifts in healthcare, including solicitation of grateful patients.
• A demonstrated working knowledge of the philanthropic aspects of tax law is required.
• Leadership skills to motivate staff members and encourage a team-of-teams approach to meet Division and University fundraising goals; excellent written and oral communication ability as reflected in proposals, oral presentations, and strategic plans. Self-starter able to secure personal appointments and qualify new prospects.
• Demonstrated achievement in securing significant philanthropic gifts; brings practical fundraising experience in developing strategies for high-level prospects who have the capacity to make transformative gifts.
• Broad knowledge of fundraising principles and techniques, preferable in a complex academic setting and proven success in building productive, long-term relationships with key business leaders, senior University leaders, faculty, staff, volunteer boards and high-level donors.
• Team-oriented strategist able to effectively manage complex situations involving numerous and sometimes competing constituencies; comfortable working in a fast-paced, results-oriented, and structured environment; Must be organized, creative, energetic and assertive, and possess the ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
• Superior interpersonal, relationship skills with demonstrated verbal and written communications skills required.
• Ability to work in a team and serve as a mentor to other gift officers.
• Demonstrated analytic and strategic thinking capabilities.
• Fluency in Spanish preferred.
• Ability to travel to visit donors and/or attend scheduled strategic events and to work evenings and weekends when necessary.
