The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley invites applications for a Tenure­-Track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level to begin in Fall of 2020. Responsibilities include delivering quality instruction within the undergraduate and graduate programs in Physics, conducting research and establishing new research directions as well as conducting scholarship activities in service to the Department, University, and Community.

The Physics Department has strong record of research in areas of gravitational wave detection, radio and optical astronomy, optics and lasers, nanotechnology, nanophotonics, biophysics, condensed matter physics, computational physics and physics education. There are several State-of-The-Art Laboratories on campus funded by the NSF, NASA, DoD, and NIH with an impressive array of modern research instruments including PPMS, SEM, EBL, etc.

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley is the newest addition to the University of Texas System. It opened its doors for enrollment in 2015 and since then was steadily growing by expanding its educational programs, adding new facilities at its multiple locations including Edinburg and Brownsville and enhancing its research activities. UTRGV is aspiring to become an emerging research University and is currently one of the few most successful Hispanic-Serving Universities in the Nation.

Minimum Qualifications

Ph.D. in Physics or related discipline from an accredited university.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

Candidates from all areas of experimental or applied physics are welcome. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in quantum optics, quantum information and simulation, and quantum materials and sensors, including design of practically feasible qubits for use in near future quantum computers. The duties will include teaching physics at both graduate and undergraduate levels, conducting research in the area of expertise, and participating in academic service and service to the community. The successful candidate is expected to establish new research programs on campus, be able to attract extramural funding, and contribute to enrichment of graduate and undergraduate programs. Strong record of independent publications is desirable. Prior examples of externally funded research and student supervision and support are considered a plus. The candidate will be able to take advantage of the EBL-SEM system being acquired by the University for on-campus and collaborative research in a wide range of micro- and nano-fabrication projects.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may
require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is
performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive
and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code
§51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of
Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least
135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement
Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week
and at least 135 days in length.

    A New University with a Long History

    The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

     

    Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

     

    UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

    The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

    Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
