Departmental Overview

Big Ideas is an annual contest aimed at providing funding, support, and encouragement to interdisciplinary teams of students who have “big ideas.” Since its founding in 2006, Big Ideas has inspired innovative and high-impact student-led projects aimed at solving problems that matter to this generation. By encouraging novel proposals and then supporting concrete next steps, Big Ideas is helping contest winners make an impact all over the world.

The Policies and Programs Manager will play a central role in the implementation, administration and delivery of key programs aimed at supporting the Big Ideas student entrepreneurial ecosystem. The candidate will be responsible for planning and executing best practices for programs, policies, outreach, evaluations and services of the Big Ideas and associated educational activities, aligning Big Ideas activities with other Blum Center and campus activities. This person will build networks of judges, mentors and other key partners. They will serve as central contributor for analysis and knowledge-sharing among student-led innovation systems, including IdeaLabs, and will support the integration of student offerings across the Blum Center portfolio.

Responsibilities

50%
  • Leads and directs a wide variety of projects and follows through with all levels of staff and individuals inside and outside the organization.
  • Responsible for managing all aspects of the day-to-day projects and activities of Big Ideas.  These include, but are not limited to:
  • Developing timelines, educational resources, and communications programs
  • Serving as the primary point-of-contact for operational questions for faculty, staff, students.
  • Leading workshops, information sessions, and other programs designed to further the
  • student entrepreneurial ecosystem
  • Leading recruitment for judges and mentors, and matching with student entrepreneurs
  • Representing Big Ideas at events to build awareness of Big Ideas and strategizing about policies to increase awareness.

  • Develops and advocates solutions to system issues, including developing and administering new systems, policies, processes, or programs.
  • Continually assesses activities, documents lessons learned, develops best practices for supporting student innovators and early-stage university-based innovations.
  • Provides recommendations on programmatic adjustments.
  • Develops, deploys and analyzes biannual alumni survey to track Big Ideas participants.
  • Plans a standardized process of analyzing metrics, and providing feedback and ideas for new systems.
  • Leads Monitoring & Evaluation efforts.

  • Provides highly complex analyses across a broad spectrum of programs, policies and initiatives or provides in-depth, complex analyses as a specialist in one policy field.
  • Understands and benchmarks program against other leading programs.

  • Provides analyses for complex budget, financial, academic, data, systems and resource projects working directly with all levels of managers.
  • Leads the analysis and planning of Big Ideas educational activities, to further align and integrate with opportunities in the Blum Center ecosystem and the campus ecosystem.

  • May lead a team of lower level analytical and administrative staff.

 

Required Qualifications
  • Strong analytical/problem-solving skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of faculty, staff and students to influence, both verbally and in writing.
  • Project management skills.
  • Strong understanding of the entrepreneurial and innovation landscape
  • Ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge of campus processes, protocols and procedures.
  • Knowledge of common campus-specific computer applications.
  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Masters degree preferred.
  • Experience working in an entrepreneurial setting or working in a system that supports entrepreneurs or intrapreneurs.
