About the College/Unit/Department

In 2018, The UGA Tifton Campus began a yearlong Centennial celebration with various events to commemorate its 100th anniversary of providing updated research to the community.

Research is done on a wide range of commodities, including cotton, peanuts, vegetables and turf grass, all of which make agriculture the No. 1 industry in Georgia.

In 2004, a teaching program was initiated and it has been growing ever since. College-level instruction on campus is aimed at undergraduate and graduate-degree level study.

This position is located in Tifton, GA, which is approximately 200 miles southwest of Athens, Georgia, 200 miles south of Atlanta, GA and approximately 70 miles north of the Florida line.

Position Summary

This is a new lab position to perform fresh produce post-harvest quality studies and analyses for research purposes. The role will also create and implement plans, strategies and SOP’s to ensure that all lab operations are capable, productive and in accordance with university, state and federal regulations and guidelines. The position will coordinate the acquisition, storage, inventory and management of supplies and lab equipment. It will also perform some administrative duties such as writing reports.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

•Individual must show initiative, motivation, and work well within a group.
•Applicants should have attention to detail and good organization skills with an interest to work in a postharvest physiology lab.
•Experience and ability to work with HPLC/MS, GC, GC/MS and spectrophotometric systems for measuring individual phenolic acids and flavonoids as well as total antioxidant capacity, respiration rates, ethylene production, etc.
•Excellent written and oral communication skills
•Ability to maintain accurate records
•Maintain a high degree of confidentiality
•Ability to demonstrate critical thinking skills while carrying out instructions.
•Ability to multi-task and prioritize work assignments with little supervision.
•Excellent time management and project management skills
•Proficiency in Microsoft word, Excel and PowerPoint
•Experience with the use of statistical programs like SAS or similar.

Duties/Responsibilities

Oversee the daily running of the lab, including daily stock management of delivered products and current supplies. This will entail keeping up with the inventory in lab and processing orders to purchase supplies and keeping lab essential items stocked for research. Manage and maintain lab equipment used to gather and generate data. Updating laboratory protocols used and results delivered for each experiment.

Conduct and support students and PI during lab experiments on postharvest physiology of fresh produce, including shelf life studies, respiration rate measurements, assessment of quality characteristics, and data analysis. Organization, maintenance and preparation of core laboratory reagents and buffers.
