Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE

Under limited supervision develop, design, implement, maintain, and report on total project including a large-range of services to keep university core technical services running at specified service levels to enable reliable and robust services to the campus. Investigate and implement possible solutions and strategies to increase robustness and reliability of core technology services including investigation of public and private cloud virtualization services and data protection services for the enterprise systems. This role maintains the underlying infrastructure that supports the daily operations of the business units, staff, and faculty of the university.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot enterprise data protection and data recovery solutions for the enterprise using high-availability architectures including clustering on-premise and in the cloud. Make proactive recommendations for capacity planning purposes in the on-premise and cloud infrastructure for enterprise data protection and data recovery services. Work with vendors and contractors to design, develop project initiation activities, including core technical implementation of those designs. Stay current with industry trends, making recommendations as needed to help the university excel. (25%)
  2. Serve as the contact person for enterprise data protection and data recovery services to work with others within UTech and the university concerning architectural options and implementation details. Engage with senior colleagues on advanced project activities with or without any direct management. (20%)
  3. Participate in the creation and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure consistency with university’s goals and industry best practices. Proactively look to improve and add efficiency to current processes and exercise judgment in the decision-making process in order to provide consistent customer service. (20%)
  4. Implement and maintain automation tools for system deployment, maintenance and daily operations. (15%)
  5. Assist in the preparation of total cost of ownership budgets for engineering, design, implementation and deployment of core technical services and projects. (10%)
NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Develop and maintain policies, system documentation and procedures for both day-to-day and emergency operations. (5%)
  1. Field after-hours emergencies and respond as appropriate. (5%)
  2. Provide backup support for Microsoft Windows and Redhat Linux Servers as needed. (<1)Perform other duties as assigned. (<1%)
CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with others within the department and biweekly within the division in order to provide design guidance for projects, help during implementation, or help during ongoing operations.

University: Some contact with anyone within the university to provide 2nd tier support for servers (1st tier being the Help Desk).

External: Monthly contact with a variety of vendors in order to acquire products and services.

Students: Minimal contact with students.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

May include supervision and team leadership of core technical services projects. May mentor and coach junior level engineers. May direct the work of student employees.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 3 to 5 years of experience.

Education/Licensing: Bachelor’s degree. Must have relevant level of certification. AWS and Azure Cloud certifications preferred.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  1. Specific expertise with VMware vSphere 6.x and above, Windows Server operating systems and Windows PowerShell scripting.
  2. Specific expertise with Dell/EMC Data Protection Suite is highly desired.
  3. Some knowledge of LDAP, Active Directory, Oracle and Microsoft SQL Databases, Apache, Perl, PHP, bash shell scripting, DHCP, and DNS is highly desired.
  4. Working knowledge and proficiency with word processor, spreadsheet, presentation, and diagramming tools such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Apps to document and communicate design principles.
  5. Excellent English oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and engage with diverse user base having varied levels of technical proficiencies.
  6. Ability to actively listen; responsive to verbal and nonverbal clues.
  7. Ability to look at situations from multiple perspectives, break problems into component parts, and look for underlying causes and think through the consequences of different courses of action. Ability to identify various types of problems along with the creation of workable solutions. Requires the identification and analysis of problems, evaluation of alternatives, and provision of solutions.
  8. Ability to develop networks and use them to strengthen internal and external support. Ability to identify opportunities and act to build strategic relationships between Utech and other University areas, teams, departments, etc., to help achieve business goals. Ability to work effectively at all levels within an organization.
  9. Ability to respond to difficult, stressful, or sensitive interpersonal situations in ways that reduce or minimize potential conflict and maintains good working relationships among internal and external customers. The ability to recognize awkward or potentially embarrassing situations that sometimes arise. Always aware of tone and careful choice of words, while at the same time ensuring that the intended message is clear, polite and readily understood.   10. Ability to develop in-depth understanding of client needs in order to be more helpful. The ability to consider how different audiences are likely to respond and choose the best method of communicating the message to each audience.

WORKING CONDITIONS

The working conditions are typical of an office environment and computer rooms. Some heavy lifting of about 45 pounds may be required and there is bending and kneeling involved to work under a computer room floor. The position will not need access to residence hall facilities but the position will have frequent access to the computer rooms. The employee may be required are to carry a cell phone, during and after their normal work hours, including weekends to attend to after-hours emergencies. Travel between various locations on campus may be required. Employee will perform repetitive motion using computer mouse and keyboard to type.
