Job Description The School of Education at the University of Missouri-Kansas City is continuously seeking qualified candidates for adjunct faculty teaching positions. The Division offers coursework in educational leadership, educational foundations, and educational research at the masters and doctoral levels. THE INTENT OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT IS TO IDENTIFY A POOL OF ADJUNCT FACULTY WHO ARE QUALIFIED TO DELIVER GRADUATE LEVEL COURSES IN THE DIVISION OF EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP, POLICY AND FOUNDATIONS. Responsibilities of UMKC Part-time Faculty Members
  1. Create and maintain civil, inclusive and engaging learning environments
  • Respect and support students’ rights and responsibilities
  • Maintain a safe learning environment and implement effective classroom management strategies
  • Provide engaging learning experiences and enticing activities
  • Facilitate students’ ability to work collaboratively
  • Accommodate students with disabilities
  • Accommodate legitimate student absences
  • Report suspected student academic dishonesty
2. Deliver curriculum through high quality course instruction
  • Articulate clear learning objectives for students in the course
  • Clearly communicate expectations and course requirements
  • Provide high quality instruction
    • Engage students in active and creative learning activities
    • Engage students in critical thinking, problem solving, creative activity and reflection
  • Create course materials (e.g., rubrics, handouts) as needed to effectively deliver curriculum and assess student learning
  • Use technology to enhance learning
    • Integrate technology in teaching strategies when it is helpful to students
    • Provide opportunities for students to use technology to solve problems
3. Assess student learning of course objectives
  • Use a variety of evaluation methods
  • Use the early alert system to identify students at risk of failing, when applicable (UMKC Connect)
  • Provide students with prompt, objective, fair feedback on their work
  • Assign grades and maintain student records in accordance with university policy
4. Adhere to and model university standards of professionalism
  • Adhere to the Standard of Faculty Conduct (CRR 330.110)
  • Adhere to all other university policies / regulations as appropriate
  • Always behave ethically by acting as an advocate for students and a steward of the university
  • Model and promote respect for diversity
  • Complete all mandatory training as required by the university (e.g., Title IX)
  • Participate in any unit-specific evaluations (e.g., end of semester course evaluations)
5. Be accessible to students for conferences / consultations
  • Engage in best practices for communicating with students
  • Refer students to appropriate student and academic support services
  • Know your responsibility as mandated reporters, and exercise it as necessary
6. Engage in critical self-reflection and professional development
  • Engage in regular reflection to evaluate (self, others) teaching and assessment practices with intention toward improvement
  • Provide and accept evaluative feedback in a professional manner
  • Engage in professional development and remain current in your discipline through reading, attending seminars, workshops, etc.

Adjunct faculty teaching in the School of Education are responsible for teaching regular courses as assigned by the Division Chairperson. Appointment These are term, non-tenure-accruing positions. Appointment periods are for the semester with consideration for reappointment.Minimum Qualifications
  • Appropriate degree for the level of class being taught
  • Experience/training relevant to the content area being taught
  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to urban issues
  • Licensure or certification, if applicable

  • Previous experience teaching at the university level
  • Familiarity with various online management systems (e.g., Canvas)

  • A flat adjunct salary is determined based on level of education.
