Job Description Summary

The Gene Therapy Program (GTP) is entering a new era of unprecedented opportunity with the great potential to reshape the face of medicine as we know it. Our discoveries have set the stage for successful treatments and possibly even cures for devastating genetic diseases.

The laboratory of Dr. Jim Wilson, at GTP of the University of Pennsylvania, has been a leader in the development of innovative vector technology for close to three decades. We have emerged as the “go-to” organization for public and private partners, who want to participate in the gene therapy space. Currently, we are positioned to lead another round of vector innovation and establish pre-clinical and clinical proof-of-concept in therapeutic applications of in-vivo genome editing.

Continuation of all GTP positions is contingent upon grant funding.

Job Description

GTP is currently looking for a Director, Immunology Discovery research to help further explore immunological questions as it relates to adeno-associated viral vectors (AAV) and other gene therapy platform technologies.

As the Director of Immunology Discovery Research, you will oversee immunology research within the discovery research team that will have a translational application to GTP programs. You will also work in tandem with our Clinical Development team during any adverse events that occur during our trials and perform research studies to the elucidate immune response to AAV Gene Therapy and other clinical programs and contribute to the development of remediation strategies. You will work in large interdisciplinary teams where you will perform design, optimization, and implementation of sophisticated experiments within specified timelines. You will contribute to writing/reviewing manuscripts, preparing presentations, establishing collaborations as well as writing/reviewing protocols and SOPs.

In addition, you will build a high-performing research team where you will mentor and provide direct oversight to Ph. D. researchers and other scientific staff. You will establish the goals of research projects and work with your team to meet program timelines. You will work closely with GTP Leadership to ensure that the research program stays within budget. In consultation with the Director of Gene Therapy, you will assess immunology discovery programs that are brought into GTP for scientific research.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience with immunology, molecular virology, and protein structures & functions. Also, you will have expertise in T-cell biology, innate immunity, and the complement activation/inflammation.

Qualifications:

- Ph. D. in the field of Immunology, Molecular Virology, or other related fields and 5+ years of direct laboratory research experience after the completion of Ph. D. is required.
- Research experience in immunology as demonstrated by scientific publications is required; research expertise in T-cell biology, innate immunity, and complement system is strongly preferred.
- Must be a self-starter but also a strong desire to contribute and work collaboratively to achieve goals.
- Success in roles requiring execution of multiple tasks while responding to multiple priorities.
- Highly functioning, detail-oriented, and analytical candidate who can think strategically
Excellent oral/written communication skills required.
