The Michigan State University (MSU) Libraries invites candidates to bring fresh perspectives to our Scholarly Communications Librarian position. The Scholarly Communications Librarian is a faculty position responsible for developing and delivering an active program of education, training, advocacy, support and information sharing regarding a wide range of issues that promote effective sharing and barrier-free access to scholarly resources. Reporting to the Associate Director for Collections, this position will lead the MSU Libraries’ efforts to promote scholarly publication reform and Open Access (OA) activities at MSU. This role includes educating the university community about the various scholarly publishing models and their impact on scholarly inquiry and instruction. This librarian will work to recruit, collect, showcase and preserve the scholarly output of MSU.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement an educational program to increase awareness among MSU faculty, researchers, and students about scholarly communication issues (e.g., publishing contracts, rights to their own scholarship, deposit, federal grant public access requirements, choice of publishing venue, publishing metrics, predatory publishing).
  • Help establish an institutional repository at MSU and work to promote its availability and capacity as well as disciplinary repositories to the university community, faculty, researchers, and students.
  • Establish mechanisms to assist faculty with publishing choices, publishing venues, publishing agreements, and management of intellectual property.
  • Work in close consultation and cooperation with the MSU Office of the General Counsel, information technology offices, academic departments, and university administrators on issues and programs related to scholarly communication.
  • Monitor national scholarly communication trends and policy issues, inform and educate the MSU community of their significance.
  • Develop the Libraries’ scholarly communication website.
  • Liaise and collaborate with subject and collection management librarians, the copyright librarian, the data librarian, and other MSU Libraries’ units, teams, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders on scholarly communication issues to ensure integrated services, knowledge-sharing, and collaboration to prepare communication tools for use with various constituencies.

The Scholarly Communication Librarian will also participate approximately quarter-time in a secondary assignment based on the needs of the library and the interests and qualifications of the candidate. Examples include, but are not limited to, reference, library instruction, outreach, collection management, cataloging, and digital scholarship. Evening and weekend hours may be required. Other appropriate duties as assigned.

The successful candidate must be creative, broadly focused, and adventurous enough to expand or shift their range of responsibilities to meet evolving campus needs.

Librarians are appointed as regular faculty in the continuing appointment system and are engaged in professional development and scholarly activities related to their position in addition to serving on library and university committees as elected or assigned.

Minimum $52,000. Salary and Librarian rank commensurate with experience. MSU provides generous fringe benefits.

Required Degree

Masters -Library or Information Science

Minimum Requirements
  • Master’s degree in information or library science from a program accredited by the American Library Association.
  • Demonstrated professional experience relevant to scholarly communications, copyright or intellectual property.
  • Planning and leadership skills, with the ability to function independently, take initiative, and set goals and priorities in a dynamic changing environment.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish positive, enthusiastic and productive collaborations working with diverse audiences, constituencies, and colleagues including faculty, students, administrators, consortia partners, and national organizations.
  • Demonstrated ability to be flexible in a dynamic and changing environment; ability to prioritize and balance various library and university needs; attention to detail; preparation and commitment to conducting independent scholarship consistent with a library faculty appointment; capacity and commitment to engage independently in continuing professional development.
Desired Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of scholarly publishing, new models for scholarly communication, and the associated technical, legal and information policy issues.
  • Ability to think creatively and develop products and services, such as web-based information and publications, training materials, workshops, conferences, and other tools relevant to scholarly communications, copyright, and fair use.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of institutional and disciplinary repositories and the ability to communicate their benefits and issues.
