The Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer (CDEIO) is responsible for ensuring the University's core value of diversity and inclusion is embedded throughout all aspects of the university, and that the Office of Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion supports all students, faculty, and staff in the university's continuous efforts to maintain an inclusive educational and workplace environment. A successful CDEIO will work interdependently and collaboratively with all campus partners.

The Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion reports directly to the President of the University and is a member of the President's Executive Cabinet.


Specific Duties:
  • Lead university-wide efforts in diversity, equity, and inclusion (i.e., professional development and training, policy development, systems and practices analysis, and internationalization).
  • As a member of the President’s Executive Cabinet (PEC), support fellow cabinet members in decision-making that is informed by data, best practices, and emerging knowledge related to inclusion in education and the workplace.
  • Partner with units across the university to facilitate attainment of the institution’s diversity mission; foster a climate of respect for diversity, a commitment to an inclusive curriculum and co-curriculum, and advancement of university-wide diversity initiatives.
  • Work within a regional and national community of scholars to advocate for inclusive excellence in all academic fields (e.g., research, creativity, and scholarship around diversity and inclusion).
  • Collaborate with the President to ensure elements of equity, diversity, and inclusion are embedded as an imperative in the institutional mission, vision, and strategic plan.
  • Collaborate with campus leaders (e.g., members of the Deans Council, the Provost Council, PEC, University Management Council, and Faculty Senate/Assembly) to revise or remove the embedded institutional policies, procedures, and norms that contribute to differential structural barriers to the access and success of students, faculty, and staff who belong to marginalized and oppressed groups.
  • Work with faculty, staff, students, and appropriate institutional governance structures to promote inclusive excellence in teaching and learning across the curriculum and co-curriculum.
  • Collaborate with senior administrators to plan and develop the organizational infrastructure for equity, diversity, and inclusion to meet the needs of the campus community.
  • Collaborate with General Counsel on Title IX matters and with the Office of Human Resources on EEO matters.
  • Conduct periodic campus climate assessments to illuminate strengths, challenges, and gaps in the development and advancement of an equitable, inclusive climate for diversity.
  • Monitor progress of student success (at all levels), faculty hiring and retention, curricular innovations, and campus climate.
  • Initiate, facilitate, and oversee planning, implementing, and evaluating processes of institutional and organizational change related to the university’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Liaise with campus special interest groups (e.g., Coalition for Diversity, Faculty Diversity Committee, etc.)
  • Supervise the Assistant Director of Diversity and Inclusion on all diversity and inclusion efforts and functions. Provide dynamic leadership to the AD of DEI in all areas concerning diversity and inclusion initiatives for all staff, faculty, and students.
  • Supervise the Administrative Assistant of DEI Office who is responsible for providing administrative support to the CDEIO and the DEI Office.
  • Connect with national organizations (i.e. NADOHE) to share La Verne’s best practices and gain knowledge about other community’s best practices
  • Collaborate with the Office of Human Resources on initiatives to enhance and strengthen recruitment programs for faculty and staff.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree from accredited higher education institution; in a DEI related field preferred
  • Recognition of intersectionality in approaching Diversity Equity and Inclusion with specific understanding of how multiple statuses (e.g., race, gender, class, sexuality, nationality, religion, ability status, etc.) intersect to affect the experiences of staff, faculty and students.
  • Ability to operationalize definitions of equity, diversity, and inclusion for the whole campus.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with senior leaders to build individual capacity and commitment towards organizational change.
  • Anticipatory, solution-oriented thinking around broad cultural and societal concerns.
  • Experience leading swift, effective responses to on-campus bias-motivated incidents.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with generating a positive environment of diversity, equity, and inclusion for students, faculty, and staff. Prior experience is similar roles with track record of increased responsibilities (8 years of experience needed; 10 years is preferred).
  • A record of exemplary personal and professional integrity and demonstrated ability to work effectively individually and as a member of a team in a collaborative, collegial way (8 years of experience needed; 10 years is preferred).
  • Ability to work with and maintain a balanced focus on students, faculty and staff matters concerning diversity, equity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated experience with communicating a vision fostering equity, diversity, and inclusiveness (in a higher education environment preferred)
  • Understanding of equal opportunity, affirmative action, and knowledge of applicable federal and California laws, policies, and procedures related to Title IV, Title IX, Americans with Disabilities, and similar others


Preferred Qualifications:
  • A terminal degree (Ph.D, J.D., Ed.D, etc) in an area related to diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, or leadership and organizational effectiveness.
  • Demonstrated understanding of and effectiveness of working on DEI issues withing a complex higher education institutional setting.
  • Diversity & Inclusion Certification from an accredited institution; a plus but not required
