Stanford's Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation (“DAPER”) is the premier intercollegiate athletics program in the country. We are the proud Home of Champions! We lead the nation with 126 NCAA championship titles, completed an unprecedented sweep of both the men's and women's Capital One Cups, and have brought home the Learfield Director's Cup for 25 straight years. We support nearly 900 student-athletes who compete on 36 intercollegiate athletics teams and also support the university's physical education, recreation and wellness initiatives. The Director, Technology Strategic Initiatives will be responsible for leading the planning and execution of technology initiatives that support the overall operations of the athletics department. This includes management of the scope, implementation and budget of the department's various technologies, platforms and systems. This position interacts with a wide range of stakeholders both within DAPER and throughout the University, including Finance, Technology, External Relations, Development, Facilities, Events & Operations, Human Resources and Student-Athlete Support Services, to enhance the department's strategic and operational business capabilities through the use of technology. This is a highly technical position which reports to the Associate Athletics Director, Finance & Business Operations within the Business Operations department of DAPER.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Provide program management, technical integration, and cross-functional execution of strategic technology initiatives across the athletics department
  • Oversee the day-to-day aspects of key initiatives, including overall management of scope, schedule, implementation and financial aspects of the initiative
  • Partner with key technology and cross-campus stakeholders, including third-party vendors, to drive key program activities
  • Identify opportunities to better leverage technology to create efficiencies and increase consistency across the athletics department
  • Build and maintain relationships with department heads and varsity programs to develop a clear understanding of business needs and how technology can address these needs
  • Develop a business intelligence (BI) strategy and governance model for all departments and varsity programs
  • Create and publish a department-wide data security policy for all Stanford and third-party business applications
  • Conduct ad hoc analysis and measurements to gauge the effectiveness of various technology initiatives
  • Lead technology efforts that further the objectives and strategies outlined in the DAPER Strategic Plan and the annual Stanford University Campus IT Plan

To be successful in this role, you will bring:


  • Bachelor's degree with quantitative/technical concentration or related field and five (5) years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience
  • Strategic thinker that can drive multiple, concurrent projects to completion
  • Strong communication and presentation skills. In particular, a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate technical and business issues and/or solutions to multiple organizational levels internally and externally as needed.
  • Strong leadership qualities and organizational skills as well as the ability to adapt quickly to changing priorities, assignments, and roles
  • Experience using data and analytics to drive business outcomes
  • Ability to learn new systems and tools quickly
  • Passion for and strong desire to work in college athletics
