Job Summary/Basic Function:

Position Description: The Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music at Lamar University is seeking a highly qualified candidate for the Assistant Professor of Horn position beginning on August 15, 2020 for the 2020/21 academic year. Candidates with enthusiasm and a vision to work within a growing department are encouraged to apply. In this position. the successful candidate will develop, sustain, and promote the horn studio with an emphasis on recruiting and retention, as well as mentoring students throughout their degree. They will also demonstrate the ability to work effectively with the department’s instrumental ensembles and will participate in departmental faculty performances, specifically in collaboration with colleagues. Candidates with extensive experience in chamber music performance and coaching are encouraged to apply, as the position will include participation in the Lamar Faculty Brass Quintet. The faculty member in this position will be expected to establish a strong regional, national, and international reputation as a teacher and performer.

Responsibilities: Teaching responsibilities will include applied horn lessons, High Brass Methods, chamber ensemble coaching, and other instructional activities within the candidate’s areas of expertise and experience, according to the needs of the department. Other faculty duties include participation in the Lamar Faculty Brass Quintet, student recruitment, creative/scholarly activity, and participation in departmental, college, and university service.
The faculty member in this position will collaborate closely with the brass faculty in managing the active brass chamber music program, Lamar Faculty Brass Quintet, the annual Brass Festival, and other activities within the brass area. The successful candidate will also assist the department in maintaining positive relationships with area public schools and private instructors.

Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience):

Qualifications/Experience: A completed (or ABD) doctoral degree in Music is strongly preferred, but candidates with a master’s degree in music from an accredited institution and substantial professional experience may be considered. Artist level performing skills and exceptional teaching ability are also expected, as is experience in performing and coaching brass chamber music. A successful record of college/university teaching and recruiting is preferred. Strong departmental citizenship and a cooperative attitude among colleagues, students, and staff is expected of all faculty. The candidate must be a positive advocate for the university both on and off campus. They should also demonstrate proficient verbal and written communication skills and possess exemplary organizational, management, and leadership skills.

Rank/Salary: The successful candidate will hold the rank of Assistant Professor (tenure track), and salary will be commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Department of Music: The Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music is a comprehensive department within the College of Fine Arts and Communication. An important and vital link to the university and the community, the Music Department has 20 full-time and 9 part-time faculty members. The department offers the Bachelor of Music degree in music education, performance, and composition; the Bachelor of Arts degree in music; and the Master of Music degree with tracks in music education and performance.

Athletics

Students can participate in or cheer on their peers in more than a dozen NCAA Division I sports. Last year, the Cardinals were Southland Conference champions in men's golf, cross country and women's tennis. The volleyball and men's basketball teams were regular season co-champs and the women's basketball team was Southland Conference East Division champion. The LU baseball program has produced several major leaguers. The women's soccer program is entering its second season. The golf team has topped national rankings in recent years.

LU is beginning to rebuild a football program. A coach was hired in 2008. The stadium and athletic complex are being renovated, and the Cardinals plan to return to the gridiron in 2010.

Campus Life

A building boom at Lamar University in the past decade has given students access to state-of-the art facilities for learning, playing, dining and living.

Residents of Cardinal Village, the modern residence halls, have private bedrooms, high-speed Internet and amenities including an outdoor pool, basketball courts and community centers. The new dining hall offers a bistro ambience with international and American cuisine.

Working out in the Sheila Umphrey Recreational Sports Center is like a trip to an exclusive gym where students have an automatic membership. Features include a 43-foot climbing wall, an elevated jogging track, new cardiovascular and weighttraining equipment, and courts for sports such as basketball, racquetball and indoor soccer. Competitive types can participate in intramural sports ranging from basketball and flag football to dodgeball, cricket and pool.

Making friends and building a social network is easy at Lamar with more than 100 clubs and organizations registered on campus. Through campus organizations, students can:

  • Join a fraternity or sorority
  • Get involved in community service
  • Delve into a cause
  • Nurture spiritual beliefs
  • Start networking in future professions
  • Do all of the above.

LU is a short drive from many outdoor adventures: a day at the beach, canoeing or fishing on area rivers and bayous, hiking in the Big Thicket National Preserve. Shopping and entertainment options also are nearby including theaters, museums and live music venues large and small.

History

Lamar University was founded in 1923 as South Park Junior College a few blocks from the current location. The name changed to Lamar College in 1932 to honor Mirabeau B. Lamar, second president of the Republic of Texas and the "Father of Education" in Texas. In 1951, the school became Lamar State College of Technology, a state-supported four-year institution, the first junior college in Texas to make such a transition. The name changed to Lamar University in 1971. The university joined the Texas State University System in 1995.
