Departmental Overview

All human activity takes place on a geographic stage of great diversity and constant transformation. For more than a century, the Geography Department at Berkeley has been a leading center of scholarship about earth's landscapes and human relationships to the environment. Our inquiries encompass a wide range of topics, from the economies and cultures of cities and built landscapes, to tropical climates and the flow of polar ice sheets. We combine rigorous empirical work with deeply conceptual theoretical analyses, always recognizing the importance of both spatial processes and accumulated histories. We use geographic analyses to illuminate the abiding problems of the modern world.

Responsibilities
  • Administers all aspects associated with course scheduling for the department. 
  • Reviews the planned curriculum from the department committee and is fully responsible for gathering data for rooms, dates, and times for each course offered each semester.
  • Devises solutions to classroom space and scheduling problems, considering the curriculum needs of students, the needs of faculty, and available options. 
  • Coordinates this information with other department units as needed. 
  • Responsible for the class enrollment management of the department which includes making entries for primary sections and secondary sections of courses, setting enrollments, working with waitlists, faculty/instructor needs for controlling enrollments. 
  • Gathers and analyzes enrollment data trends. 
  • Takes into consideration the proper sequencing of courses for progression toward degree, courses taught in other departments, and other complicating factors to assure successful academic careers. 
  • Troubleshoots enrollment issues for students enrolling in geography classes. 
  • Implements a diverse range of financial services for faculty, students, and department staff. 
  • Reviews, processes, and approves financial data and transactions for the Departments. 
  • Manages and ensures that financial processing functions are performed with accuracy and that daily operations run smoothly. 
  • Applies professional financial services concepts to independently perform analyses of complex financial services such as researching discrepancies and compliance with external regulations and internal policies.
  • Researches, develops, and implements new and changing business processes. 
  • Assesses and recommends changes as needed to ensure financial processes maintain compliance with federal and state requirements and internal financial/audit policies. 
  • Recommends and implements quality customer service standards and procedures to affected constituencies including internal department, students, and external vendors. 
  • Serves as the financial liaison to L&S Deans' Office and departments on campus. 
  • Applies knowledge on a wide variety of internal and external policies and regulations to address a wide range of issues. 
  • Oversee the work of work study student employees.   
  • Reads professional literature to understand regulations and best practices. 
  • Attends campus sponsored presentations on new and best practices. 
  • Keeps informed of changes and upgrades to campus systems and processes. 
  • Makes recommendations on implementation of policy changes to the Department.

Required Qualifications
  • Working knowledge and understanding of, and/or ability to quickly learn:
    • Common campus-specific and other computer application programs such as; SIS/CSIR, BFS, BearBuy, Travel/Entertainment systems; 
    • UC Berkeley course scheduling policies and practices;
    • UC Berkeley purchasing policies and travel and entertainment policies. 
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, both verbally and in writing. 
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative, effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff, including individuals from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently or as part of a team, organize work assignments, establish priorities, develop appropriate recommendations and solutions, and ensure completion of multiple projects to meet all deadlines.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality. 
  • Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns. Develop solutions to problems. 
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office, Excel, and common desktop/web applications.
  • Demonstrated customer service orientation, excellent customer service skills, and effective interpersonal and oral/written communication skills. 
  • Bachelors degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Benefits
