Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Drawing and Illustration, Department of Art and Design

The Department of Art and Design at the University of Missouri-St. Louis is conducting a search for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Drawing and Illustration. The position’s teaching load, based on campus standards, is 9 credits (3 courses) per semester, but with an active research practice is typically a 2-2/180 student credit hours, and the faculty member is expected to contribute to the department not only through teaching and service, but through significant research in this field. All faculty are encouraged and supported to engage in continuous professional development, including improvement in teaching effectiveness, keeping current with professional best practices in your discipline and the advancement of the University’s and Department’s missions through service and committee work. The position offers a competitive salary, full benefits, opportunity for promotion, and departmental/institutional support. The ideal candidate will be able to teach all levels of drawing and illustration, using traditional methods and new technologies. Experience with drawing via tablet or other new technology is expected. An understanding of how the static image can move towards motion (animation) – or a willingness to learn – is desirable, but not required. The candidate must have an MFA in Studio Art or Design and teaching experience beyond graduate school appointments.

Qualifications:

  • MFA from an accredited degree-granting institution with a 2D emphasis
  • Professional level experience with multiple traditional mediums of 2D drawing
  • Experience teaching beyond graduate school appointments
  • Evidence of successful professional practice and/or the development of a teaching portfolio
  • Ability to engage in constructive critiques of student proficiency
  • Proven high level of proficiency with foundations-level 2D design and drawing instruction
  • Ability to work closely and productively with faculty colleagues
  • Willingness to participate in service to the department, college, university and system
  • Willingness to participate in academic functions outside of the teaching role
  • Professional level experience with multi-media tools, including digital drawing
  • Willingness to participate in program and curriculum development and assessment
  • Willingness to participate in professional and pedagogical development

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Interest or experience with new pedagogical technologies, including distance delivery (online)
  • Interest or experience with digital animation technologies
  • Considerable experience with digital drawing across multiple platforms/technologies
