Job Details

The Director of Student Activities and Leadership is a critically important leadership position within the Student Affairs area and the College. Reporting to the Dean of Students, the Director is responsible for: 1) development and implementation of a comprehensive program of student activities and student leadership development, including the student governance system and volunteer community service; 2) oversight of the New Student Orientation program; 3) oversight of the College events management scheduling system; and 4) management of the Sommer Center student union building. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:  

Student Activities and Leadership:  

· Research best practice for student leadership development programs; design and implement a program for student leadership development appropriate for Wells students.  

· Serve as advisor to the Collegiate Cabinet, the Committee of Class Councils, the Junior and Senior classes, the Program Board and other student groups, as assigned.  

· Promote student participation in clubs and organizations to build enthusiasm around campus life.  

· Utilize the Presence software system for tracking attendance at events and activities; train students, faculty and staff on how to use the software.  

· Manage assigned budget allocations and review and approve all student event programming contracts.   

· Facilitate large scale campus programs such as welcome week, late night breakfast, and other events, as assigned.  

· Develop community service and volunteer opportunities for students, such as Alternative Break Service programs and Day of Service events.  

New Student Orientation:  

· Provide leadership for development of New Student Orientation programs in collaboration with campus colleagues, to address the onboarding needs of students and the campus community.  

· Recruit, select, train and supervise student Orientation Leaders.  

· Convene New Student Orientation planning meetings of designated campus staff, as required.  

· Develop assessment protocols and conduct assessments of program activities and events.  

Campus Events Management:  

· Manage the SchoolDude software used for room reservations to schedule all campus events.  

· Enter course scheduling day/time/room information into the SchoolDude software.  

· Produce weekly reports of scheduled events to identify resources needed for support, such as information technology, food service, seating arrangements, etc.  

· Convene regular meetings of employees responsible for campus events to review the schedule and resolve issues and concerns.  

· Using information from SchoolDude, create the Wells Weekly notice of events for students to attend; email the notice to students each week and publish event information on the College’s Globe website.  

Sommer Center:  

· Serve as principle manager of the Sommer Center facility; identify and order equipment, furnishings, games and other items to address student needs.   

· Manage the use and programming of activities at the Sommer Center.  

· Recruit, train and supervise Student Event Coordinators assigned to organize programs and events at the Sommer Center and the Well, in order to generate a heightened sense of campus community.  

Other Duties and Administrative Responsibilities:  

· Serve as an instructor for Wells student development course sections, as assigned.  

· Provide 24-hour on-call oversight of residential students as assigned, if campus housing is provided under the terms of employment.  

· Member of the Title IX Team 

· Supervise student office staff and student event staff.  

· Manage budgets assigned to the position.  

· Develop an assessment plan for the activities sponsored by the office.  

· On-going policy review and revision in collaboration with Student Affairs staff and the Dean of Students  

· Be present at designated “high-risk” campus events, including some dances, and senior week.  

· Serve on college committees as requested to represent the Dean of Students office  

· Perform other duties, as assigned.  

  

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:  

Knowledge of student development theory and its application in a college setting. Experience with the development of student leadership training programs. Familiarity with onboarding needs to help students successfully transition to college. Experience organizing large-scale events. Ability to master software programs that pertain to the position (Presence and SchoolDude). Experience with personnel supervision and budget management. Ability to teach student development courses to help students adjust to campus life.  

QUALIFICATIONS:  

Master’s Degree in College Student Personnel Administration, Educational Administration or related discipline. Minimum of three years professional experience in higher education. Outstanding interpersonal and management skills. Demonstrated ability to cultivate positive relationships with students and student organizations. Demonstrated ability to coordinate programs with other college departments and to assess program effectiveness. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong computer skills. Ability to handle extremely sensitive and confidential matters discreetly. Ability to work independently with little supervision. Knowledge of budget preparation and management.
