The research assistant professor will contribute to the integrated extension, research, and teaching) land-grant mission of the home unit and IANR, as an effective scholar and citizen, including supporting student recruitment and IANR science literacy.
The research assistant professor will manage multiple federal awards. This includes overseeing budgets, conducting research outlined in grant proposals, preparing reports, and developing manuscripts and presentations to report research findings. Additionally, the incumbent will mentor and oversee personnel responsible for developing and disseminating product associated with award tasks. The incumbent will provide leadership in updating the Fire Effects Information System Database – an important database for land managers and resource specialists in the state thinking about fire management for restoration and management. In so doing, they will work with the United States Forest Service and other state and federal agencies to provide scholarship and outreach regarding this important product for managers to maintain the resilience of working agricultural landscapes to fire. In addition the incumbent will conduct research on policy related to fire management and publish the findings in ecological or policy journals.

As appropriate to the appointment, the incumbent will develop a high-impact, nationally and internationally recognized research program in rangeland ecology and land-use policy; seek and establish effective disciplinary and transdisciplinary collaborations including effective integration with research groups; connect with stakeholders, agency, and/or industry partners to strengthen research; publish in high-quality, high-impact peer-reviewed journals, and participate in scientific meetings and other appropriate professional activities. This includes measuring the impact of your programs and communicating results to administrators, stakeholders, users, and media.

In addition to the above-described duties, the individual will be expected to accept committee assignments, reporting responsibilities, and other special ad hoc assignments as requested at the administrative unit, college/division, institute, and/or university level.

Minimum Required Qualifications

A PhD in rangeland ecology or related field.
Experience overseeing federal awards and personnel.
Experience developing high-quality peer-reviewed publications.
Experience leading a team in the development of product, such as databases, extension reports, and land management resources.
Prior understanding of land-use policy and familiarity with policy and legal research.
High quality communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Legal or policy background.
Experience in developing grant proposals and securing extra-mural funding.
Experience communicating with various stakeholder groups including the public and agency personnel.
