Job Description Summary

*This position is in the Town of Wake Forest, NC, home of the original campus of Wake Forest University.

Promotes and enhances the functions of the Wake Forest Historical Museum and Wake Forest College Birthplace Society with museum constituents through social media, publications, and direct contact. Promotes an active museum program by seeking and administering grants,and supporting the board and executive director in efforts to cultivate and secure gifts, and works to strengthen relationships to increase philanthropic support. Oversees the daily operations of the Museum in collaboration with the Executive Director.

The Wake Forest Historical Museum interprets the early history of Wake Forest University before its move from its original home in Wake Forest to Winston-Salem, NC. It includes the Calvin Jones House (c. 1820) and a 7,000-square-foot facility (2010) with a large permanent exhibit, meeting space, offices, and archival space. The Birthplace Society is the 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that owns and oversees the operations of the Wake Forest Historical Museum.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Works in collaboration with the Manager of Community and Academic Learning to develop and implement a plan designed to encourage academic opportunities and programming.
  • Develops, writes, and produces educational materials, newsletters, brochures, and other publications.
  • Conducts media relations; maintains contacts with local print and broadcast media outlets.
  • Updates website and social media platforms to enhance communication with alumni, Society members, volunteers, community organizations, and the university community
  • In collaboration with the Executive Director and Manager of Community and Academic Learning, designs and develops museum exhibits and interpretative panels.
  • Follows standard museum best practices
  • Processes weekly financial deposits and compiles monthly board financial statements.
  • Acts as a liaison with various committees and organizations in the Town of Wake Forest
  • Seeks new sources of funding through direct fundraising solicitation and grants; responsible for grant writing and administration, and developing and maintaining relationships at the local level to foster philanthropic support
  • Maintains membership data and semi-annual solicitations for Birthplace Society.
  • In collaboration with the Manager of Community and Academic Learning, supports recruitment and training of docents and other volunteers.
  • Greets public and conducts small and group tours
  • Develops and maintains relationships with constituents through programing, and direct communication.
  • Develops multi-media programming associated with new and existing exhibits at the Wake Forest Historical Museum.
  • Attends board meetings and acts as general secretary to the Board of Directors
  • Manages the overall archival and artifact collection of the museum
  • Contributes to a transparent and equitable organizational culture where ethical and equity policies and practices are understood and lived out by all staff.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, history, museum studies, or reasonably related discipline or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Knowledge of communication principles, media, and marketing techniques.
  • Proficiency in web-site design, social media communications, and design software
  • Prefer knowledge of basic museum practices and standards.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of Wake Forest University Advancement and a commitment to equity, particularly racial equity, with a willingness to proactively learn about it and integrate it into all aspects of the work.
  • Respect for the dignity and abilities of all people.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail regarding print media and events coordination.
