Job Description Summary

Under minimal supervision, performs experiments in the area of molecular biochemistry to study enzyme reaction mechanisms. Prepares biological samples including bacterial samples and performs quantitative kinetic analysis using established or adapted procedures.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs and designs research experiments in the area of molecular biochemistry to study enzyme reaction mechanisms.
  • Maintains accurate and complete records of research, including laboratory notebooks and digital data records.
  • Prepares reagents such as buffers, enzymes, and nucleic acids for research.
  • Writes research results for publication in scientific journals.
  • Provides research guidance to undergraduates and graduate students.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Ph.D. in Biological Chemistry, Microbiology, or related fields.
  • Knowledge of the principles of molecular biology, molecular cloning, enzyme kinetics.
  • Knowledge of protein biosynthesis pathway.
  • Skills in the safe and accurate use of biological and chemical reagents including radioactive isotopes.
  • Ability to solve problems in the performance or results of experiment.
  • Ability to determine numerical calculations of reagent concentrations are expected.
  • Strong communication (verbal and written) skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a group as part of team.
  • Proficiency in the use of computers including spreadsheet and data analysis programs.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in experimental systems using the above knowledge and skills.
  • Moderate physical activity: Standing in the lab for periods of an hour or more. Manipulating fragile tubes, using a pipette.
  • The candidate will work with low levels of radioactive substances and toxic chemicals.

Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for own work.
  • Provides training and assists in the supervision of graduate and undergraduate students in the laboratory.
