Departmental Overview

The Department of Nutritional Sciences & Toxicology (NST) focuses on the metabolic biology of nutrients and toxicants in relation to human health and disease.

Our research and curriculum span a breadth of topics, from the delivery of nutrients to mammalian cells and their molecular functions, through the influence of genetics on diet-associated human disease, to programs and policies that address human and environmental health and safety. We invite you to explore our academic programs and encourage you to pursue a course of study in the exciting and vital disciplines of Metabolic Biology and Molecular Toxicology.

Responsibilities

• Applying advanced Student Services concepts, provides the most complex student services to the organization's management, faculty and students.
• Identifies systemic problems and issues and proposes solutions to the department management on changes to department policy and procedures.
• Manages recruitment process of 45 GSIs and 7 Readers per year
• Within the academic department, plans and implements complex, high-visibility student events, such as memorial lectures, new student visit days, orientations, and weekly seminars
• Advises chairs and faculty on the formulation of department/school/college policy by advising them on areas needing clarification and identifying solutions; analyzes the consequences of organization's academic policies and recommends new or changed policies; recommends solutions to organization's problems without precedent.
• Academic Advising: Identifies and refers for resolution intricate student issues/grievances such as alleged discrimination, complex grade dispute issues, and students' personal crises.
• Recruitment and Admissions: Manages all the recruitment and admission processes for two graduate programs. Analyzes and advises on programs' recruitment strategies.
• Develops all materials for graduate recruitment, including designing, developing and managing three departmental websites.
• Financial: Analyzes and develops complex funding packages for graduate students using block grants, fellowships, training grants, departmental funds and faculty research funds. Administers departmental block grant, NIH training grant, scholarships and extra-mural fellowships. Plans, develops and administers the student services budget for the department. Advises management on available funds for entering students based on special funding from all sources including scholarships, awards and fellowships.
• Hires GSIs and Readers for NST courses.
• Career Counseling: Counsels students on Post-degree employment opportunities and practices.
• Participates in professional student services committees that develop policies/procedures with department, college and campus wide impact. Represents the student services unit to the campus community and relevant external constituencies.

Required Qualifications

• Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
  
• Knowledge of or ability to learn University-specific computer application programs and knowledge of University and departmental principles and procedures involved in risk assessment and evaluating risks as to likelihood and consequences.
  
• Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements.
  
• Skills in project management, social perceptiveness to be aware of others' reactions and understanding why they react as they do.
  
• Ability in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems, persuasion, leadership.
  
• In-depth knowledge of the field's post-degree employment opportunities and practices.
  
• Interpersonal skills.
  
• Multicultural competencies; ability to work with diverse populations.
  
• Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $50,400.00 - $72,800.00.
