Description: SJSU Department of Film and Theatre offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Sound Design, Mixing and Post-Production beginning August 2020. We seek a colleague with expertise producing sound for a range of visual media platforms including film, digital and streaming platforms, interactive media, animation, gaming formats or other emerging media formats, and who can teach across fiction, non-fiction, experimental or hybrid forms. We seek a specialist who can guide students in sound creation, recording, editing, effects, mixing and/or composing for film. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to enhancing the diversity and overall excellence of the academic community.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • MFA, or MA in Cinema or a related field
  • Professional experience as an active filmmaker and/or sound designer/mixer
  • Record of teaching cinema sound production and/or post-production across a broad spectrum of cinematic and media arts at the undergraduate level
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with others in a small, dynamic department
  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience

 

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated success in college-level teaching and professional-level entertainment industry experience. Preferred qualifications include:

  • Demonstrated artistic achievement in sound design for film
  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching sound design, recording and mixing in a hands-on student-centered teaching environment
  • Proficiency with professional recording and mixing software and hardware for field and studio experience with digital technologies and equipment as related to professional-level audio production and post- production
  • Demonstrated ability to produce design support to professional standards and on deadline
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience working successfully in teams and in collaboration across disciplines of television, radio, film, theatre, and/or music. The ideal candidate will have extensive professional experience in film sound, post sound editing, and final multi-channel mixing and experience mentoring film undergraduate students in the conceptualization, planning, execution, and presentation of sound for their projects.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Design and teach introductory and advanced level courses in best practices for sound recording for film, including topics such as: microphone pick patterns, microphone placement, sound isolation, production sound mixing, use of recording equipment;supervising and recording ADR/voice and Foley room recording technique, as well as post sound editing and final multi-channel mixing
  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching, and/or scholarship/creative works
  • Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically under-represented communities
  • Advise and mentor students, and participate in student recruitment
  • Participate in the development and promotion of production design and technology in the department and across the college
  • Perform committee and other service at the department, college, and university levels
  • Participate and record of leadership in curriculum development and teaching of other courses to meet the needs of the program and its students
  • Develop and sustain an ongoing record of research, creative activities, and other professional engagement
  • Record of contributing to collegial, supportive and collaborative work environments.

Candidate must demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.

 

Salary Range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Starting Date: August 13, 2020
