POSITION OBJECTIVEThe executive director of development will manage a comprehensive advancement program, with primary focus on the management and solicitation of individual and foundation gifts for the Weatherhead School of Management (WSOM) at Case Western Reserve University from its natural constituency and beyond (gifts of $100,000 and above), including major, planned, and restricted gifts. The Department of External Relations includes all advancement functions of the Weatherhead School, with over 19,000 alumni throughout the world.In addition to and in coordination with the associate dean of development and external relations, the executive director is responsible for the development of overall fundraising plans for WSOM in alignment with the overarching strategies of the division of university relations and development. This person will engage in direct face-to-face cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors, working closely with the associate dean for development and external relations.The executive director, at the direction of the associate dean, will manage other senior directors, directors and associate directors, and serve as second in command in the Department of External Relations. The executive director will develop strong relations with the dean, the assistant dean, faculty, college staff, central development personnel, university trustees, and other internal constituents.Functioning as part of a university development team, the incumbent will be expected to work collegially, and in partnership, with school-based colleagues. The executive director will assist in overseeing the university's fundraising programs and will offer counsel in planning and implementing school-specific initiatives. Ability to travel is required.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward major gifts ($100,000+) for the school in accord with fundraising priorities established by the dean and associate dean. Ability to travel within Ohio and nationally will be required on a regular basis. (25%)Support the associate dean with implementation of the major components of a comprehensive campaign in support of the school, including strategic planning, oversight, staff and volunteer management, and solicitation strategies. Cultivate and drive major gift solicitations by working closely with the associate dean, vice presidents, deans and other school development officers. Assist in formulating a leadership annual and special giving fundraising plan that articulates prospects to be seen, solicited and funds to be raised for the dean, associate dean, and other external relations officers. (20%)Establish and execute identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities for school overall; plan gift strategies in conjunction with all external relations staff members. Regularly review achievement toward completion of goals. (10%)Work with the dean, department chairs, and/or faculty and /or volunteers and other leaders to cultivate and solicit leadership gifts. (10%)Supervise all individual development officers, and serve as mentor and advisor to external relations team. In absence of the associate dean, assume management responsibilities (operational, financial, and supervisory) for the entire office. (10%)In conjunction with the dean and associate dean, identify, qualify, recruit and train a core group of volunteer solicitors to assist with national cultivation and solicitation activities. Operate effectively, both as an individual and in a team environment, under the pressures of a major fundraising effort. (7.5%)Collaborate with the university’s corporate and foundation relations officers, as well as the dean and associate dean, department chairs, faculty and staff on development and coordination of gifts from corporations and foundations. (7.5%)
- Responsible for proposal preparation for funding appeals to external constituencies, including corporations and foundations. (5%)Work with associate director of donor engagement and stewardship to develop an acknowledgement process for donor and gifts. (2%)Assist with the staffing of alumni and development events and provide support for volunteer leadership recruited to further the college’s overall goals for development. (2%)Perform other duties as assigned by the associate dean and the dean, including but not limited to management of other existing and future development, alumni and engagement programs. (1%)
Department: Frequent contact with dean, associate deans, department chairs and directors. Contact with faculty, students and staff as required to perform essential functions.
University: Contact with the president’s office, vice presidents, deans, trustees, alumni, directors of administrative departments, faculty and staff as required to perform essential functions.
External: Daily contact with donors, alumni, foundation representatives, community organizers/advocates, corporate executives and federal, state, and local government officials. Contact with foreign visitors, officials and academic boards and organizations as required to perform essential functions.
Students: Contact with undergraduate, graduate and professional students as required to perform essential functions.
Responsible for supervising senior director of national development, director of national development and director of leadership annual and special giving.
Experience: 10 or more years of progressive experience in development, alumni relations, or related field (substantive sales, marketing, and/or legal experience). University experience is highly desirable; however, experience in a multi-unit organization or corporation will also be considered. Must have a proven track record of successful fundraising. Previous supervisory experience required.
Education/Licensing: Bachelor’s degree is required. Master’s degree preferred.
