Position SummaryThe Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University, invites applications for a Tenure System or Health Programs Faculty Appointment System (HP) position in Soft Tissue Surgery. Tenure system appointments typically have 40% or more of assignable time devoted to research and scholarship, with another 40-50% devoted to clinical instruction and patient care services. HP appointments are unique to Michigan State University Colleges of Human, Osteopathic, Veterinary Medicine, and Nursing and were created to enhance programs in clinical education, patient care services, and clinical research. HP faculty appointed in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences typically have 50-70% clinical assignments devoted to clinical instruction and patient care services. In addition, HP faculty are expected to be active in research and other scholarly endeavors. Both appointment types are expected to contribute to preclinical teaching and the general administrative efforts of the Department and College. The HP position is a multi-year renewable appointment. We are looking to fill multiple positions, either appointment type is available at the Assistant, Associate or Professor rank depending on qualifications and experience. The successful candidate will join our dynamic soft-tissue surgery group, and an integral member of the Surgery Section, which includes 4 orthopedic surgeons, 3 residents, two surgery-specialty-interns, 9 service-dedicated veterinary technicians. The Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences comprises 40 faculty and staff, and has an onsite, state-of-the art Veterinary Medical Center (VMC). The VMC provides outstanding patient care with a superb team of highly qualified veterinary technicians to support the specialist services. It is equipped with advanced diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities including 10 operating suites, a wound management suite, operating microscope, minimally invasive laparoscopy/thoracoscopy, 64 slice helical CT, digital cinefluoroscopy unit, intra-operative C-arm, 1.5 Tesla MRI, nuclear medicine, linear accelerator, video endoscopy, renal replacement therapy, ventilator support. We have all the supportive specialty services including 24/7 emergency and critical care, step-down ICU, internal medicine, anesthesiology, neurology, cardiology, dentistry, primary care, interventional radiology, sports medicine and rehabilitation, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, oncology and dermatology.
The soft tissue surgery service has a strong program with a busy caseload and experienced faculty. The successful candidate’s responsibilities will include management of referral soft tissue surgery cases, clinical instruction of house officers and students, and a 20-30% commitment to scholarly contributions in the candidate’s area of expertise. Participation in the didactic pre-clinical teaching curriculum and committee assignments is also expected. Assignments of clinical service, teaching and scholarly activity are negotiable with the Department Chairperson. Merit evaluations and promotions are based on the faculty member’s performance within the assignments.

Such activities are encouraged at both the Departmental and College level, and support is available for grant writing, locating external funding resources, and processing grant submissions. Internal funding opportunities are also available through endowed research funds. The College of Veterinary Medicine has active faculty development and mentorship programs to facilitate career progression.
Required DegreeDoctorate -Veterinary Medicine
Minimum RequirementsApplicants must have a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree and be eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Michigan. The candidate must have excellent communication skills and the ability to work cooperatively within a team.
Desired QualificationsBoard certification in the American College of Veterinary Surgeons is preferred but ACVS board-eligible candidates will be considered. An advanced research degree and/or an interest in surgical oncology will also be favorably considered.
