Position Summary

The College of Arts and Letters (CAL) at Michigan State University invites applications for a fixed-term faculty position in the Center for Language Teaching Advancement (CeLTA) that will primarily involve serving as core faculty in the MA in Foreign Language Teaching (MAFLT) program. The position is a full-time academic appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor with a teaching load of up to 3 courses per semester (Fall, Spring), beginning August 16, 2020. The initial contract will be for three years and may be renewed, depending on performance and program needs.

The MAFLT is a well-established distance-based program that educates in-service and aspiring teachers of over a dozen foreign languages. The curriculum emphasizes SLA theory, proficiency-based approaches, innovative technology, and interculturality in foreign language pedagogy. Although the primary emphasis of this position is excellence in teaching and teacher development, we encourage additional research, scholarship, and service at and beyond MSU. While the teaching load for this position is anticipated to be entirely online, the successful candidate will be expected to be present in East Lansing in order to play an active role in the faculty community, participate in relevant faculty and staff meetings, and fulfill service-related duties.

Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching online graduate level courses as primary instructor. These courses are designed to develop master foreign language teachers by offering current and compelling theory and practices. Topics may include methods, assessment, instructional technology, second language acquisition theories and research, and/or special topics courses in the instructor’s area of expertise.   • Preparing course materials and syllabi, updating and managing course sites in the MSU learning management system, grading assignments and providing feedback, and communicating with students promptly and regularly.
  • Contributing to ongoing enhancement of online course design and delivery across the program.
  • Mentoring the development of extensive master’s projects and web-based teaching portfolios and helping to evaluate student outcomes.
  • Supporting MAFLT program efforts in the areas of admissions, recruitment, student professionalization, peer observation, course evaluation, etc.
  • Attending faculty meetings for the MAFLT Program and CeLTA.
  • Participating in relevant CeLTA events and initiatives, as appropriate and desired.
  • Following university, program, and course policies and guidelines.

    Minimum Requirements

    Candidates must have a Ph.D. in applied linguistics, second language studies, foreign language education, or a related field.

    Desired Qualifications

    The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong foundation in theory and research methods associated with applied linguistics and articulate clear and specific goals for supporting language teacher development. Preference will be given to applicants with experience in teaching foreign or second languages, teaching or supervising graduate students, and using a variety of instructional technologies. Although courses are taught in English, proficiency in one or more languages other than English is strongly preferred. Familiarity with North American K-12 foreign language education and experience living and working in multiple countries are also beneficial.

    Further supporting materials that demonstrate excellence in teaching, expertise in instructional technology, research and writing skills, or foreign language proficiency may also be included.
