The Puget Sound Institute is seeking an early career research scientist or engineer to contribute to our collaborative project to model the sources, movements, and fates of toxic chemicals in the Puget Sound/Salish Sea ecosystem. We are specifically interested in candidates who understand the environmental behavior of organic chemicals (particularly PCBs at the congener level) and can aggregate and evaluate large monitoring datasets to support the development of a deterministic water quality model. This collaborative project will contribute to the development and improvement of the computational models to improve our understanding of the sources, fate and transport of toxic chemicals in the Puget Sound/Salish Sea ecosystem. The work will be performed in collaboration with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory and focus primarily on the Salish Sea Model.


  • Aggregate, evaluate, and interpret large monitoring data sets to support the development of a deterministic, hydrodynamic water quality model and serve as the collaborative link between the modelers from Pacific Northwest Laboratories, who developed the Salish Sea Model, and water quality scientists and engineers from the UW Puget Sound Institute, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, and other stakeholders.

  • Candidates must have an earned doctorate in environmental chemistry/engineering, oceanography, or closely related field and have demonstrated the ability to quantitatively describe chemical transport at the ecosystem scale, and three months of job-related experience.

  • Experience working in estuarine environments is helpful but not required.
