Description

The Department of Astronomy at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar, in the area of supernovae (SNe) and other transients such as gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), with an expected start date in the fall of 2020.

The successful candidate will work under the direction of Professor Alex Filippenko and will preferably have an interest and experience in optical spectropolarimetry of SNe. Other interests could include optical/infrared spectroscopy of SNe, studying long-term light curves of transients from diverse datasets; including data from the Lick and Keck Observatories; analysis of Hubble Space Telescope spectra and images of SNe, as well as images of their environments; the SN Hubble diagram; and progenitors of SNe. The successful candidate will participate in observations and data reduction, writing proposals and papers, developing data-analysis software, and assisting graduate and undergraduate students in the research group.

Basic/Minimum Qualifications (at time of application):
PhD or equivalent international degree or enrolled in PhD or equivalent international degree program.

Additional Qualifications (by start date):
A PhD degree or equivalent international degree is required by the start date.

Preferred Qualifications:
-A PhD degree or equivalent international degree in astronomy, astrophysics, or related fields.
-Experience with astronomical observations and data reduction, preferably optical spectropolarimetry but at least optical/infrared CCD photometry and long-slit spectroscopy.
-Knowledge of current problems related to SNe and/or GRBs and demonstrated competence in their solutions.

Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. The position is at full time (100%) for two years, with the possibility for a third-year extension depending on the availability of funds. The position will be open until filled. This position is in a represented bargaining unit.
