Job description

Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship - Public Humanities and African American Life

Location:
Clemson University
Open Date:
Jan 6, 2020
Description:

A Post-Doctoral Research Position, renewable for a second year, on “Public Humanities and African-American Life,” made possible through a partnership with Clemson University’s CU FELLOWS program.

Built on the former plantation of proslavery American statesman John C. Calhoun, Clemson University hosts a complicated, painful, rich, unique and overlooked African-American history: a land-grant public university founded in the Jim Crow era on land formerly worked by enslaved persons and share croppers, with the first campus buildings built by convict laborers, for an all-male, all-white, student population, Clemson University would desegregate the state of South Carolina in 1963.

Today, Clemson is an R-I land grant university, and its setting at the corner of three counties in Upstate, South Carolina provides a rich context for a recent PhD (doctorate received since May 2018) in allied fields such as African American Literature, African American History, and Africana or African Diaspora Studies.

Demonstrable interests in Public History, Digital History, Public Humanities, Digital Humanities, and related fields preferred.

The successful candidate will be able to participate in various Humanities research support settings—including multiple reading groups the Humanities Hub is sponsoring, campus events organized by the Humanities Hub—and to become involved in Professor Rhondda Thomas’s Call My Name project and its tri-county coalition.

Qualifications:

A recent PhD (doctorate received since May, 2018) in allied fields such as African American Literature, African American History, and Africana or African Diaspora Studies, and/or allied fields.

Demonstrable interests in Public History, Digital History, Public Humanities, Digital Humanitis, and related fields preferred.
