Teachers College, Columbia University, is seeking applications and nominations for an Associate Dean for Research.  The Associate Dean for Research is the principal research officer for the College. This position reports to the Provost/Dean and is a critical member of the leadership team. The Associate Dean provides the leadership necessary to foster inter-disciplinary collaboration across the College, increases federal funding of research, supports research excellence in all sub-disciplines, and develops innovative strategies for supporting student research engagement.

The Associate Dean supports TC’s aim of applying research to improve educational outcomes of students in local, state, and national educational settings through the translation of basic research findings into practice, active dissemination of results, and the maintenance of research partnerships.

The Associate Dean seeks opportunities to support TC’s commitment to social justice in education and diversity, equity, and inclusion in its research enterprise.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

The Associate Dean is charged with the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Provides and implements a vision for strengthening and expanding TC’s research enterprise, consistent with the aims of President Bailey.
  • Supports scholarship in education, psychology, and health sciences that improves lives and society, engages communities, and exchanges new knowledge.
  • Oversees the College’s research units, including (1) Office of Sponsored Programs, and (2) Research Centers and Institutes
  • Partners with Department Chairs to support the research experience and training of graduate students.
  • Engages in effective and transparent decision-making in consultation with key stakeholders, including but not limited to the President, Provost, Vice President for Finance and Administration, Vice President for Development, faculty, and others as appropriate.
  • Contributes to research aspects of professional development and mentoring of junior faculty.
  • Leads efforts to effectively organize and identify funding for interdisciplinary research and graduate education initiatives.
  • Coordinates graduate research training efforts, including support for grant/fellowship writing and ethics education.
  • Promotes the social importance and creative value of faculty research to the broader community.
  • Fosters creativity and cultivates critical partnerships and collaborations across the state, region, nation, and the world with communities, foundations, industry, non-profits, government and other academic institutions.
  • Pursues and promotes federal, state, and foundation support for strategic research and economic development initiatives.
  • Chairs TC’s research committee.
  • Maintains the integrity of the research enterprise by ensuring compliance with university, state and federal policies and regulations.

 

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Earned doctorate or equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in administration and management.
  • Outstanding, nationally recognized record of scholarship and success in attracting competitive research funding along with experience in leading multidisciplinary research/creative initiatives.
  • Demonstrated excellence in graduate student education/mentoring.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member in a diverse, collaborative environment and provide effective leadership to enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion in the research enterprise.

 

Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills

  • Demonstrated achievement in teaching and scholarship meriting appointment as a tenured Full Professor.
  • Familiarity with research methods and standards across disciplines.
  • Demonstrated excellence in leading or participating in a complex organization with a broad focus across disciplines, including the Social Sciences, the Arts and the Humanities.
  • Experience in cultivating diversity in research and education and fostering the development of faculty research programs.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in graduate student program development.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the role that TC plays in the vitality of the region and the state, and of the importance of research, creative activity, and scholarship across the university.
  • Ability to articulate a vision for research, creative activities, and graduate education that represents the diverse disciplines of TC
