Departmental Overview

Summer Sessions, Study Abroad & Lifelong Learning (SSALL) is a vibrant and dynamic organization that enables more than 15,000 visiting, UC and potential Cal students; parents, faculty, academic units, international business partners, and central campus service providers participate in providing more than 600 summer courses, study abroad experiences, global internships, and year-around program or courses, lectures, special events and interest circles for older adults.


SSALL is committed to offering quality, innovative learning experiences through open enrollment to a diverse audience of world-wide learners, while supporting the campus missions and commitments to its stakeholders.


SSALL is seeking a creative designer to join our marketing team. The successful candidate will conceive, create, and approve visual publications, presentations, and communications for two brands—Berkeley Summer Sessions and Berkeley Study Abroad--using various creative methods. The ideal candidate has an in-depth understanding of the audience(s) and visual communication strategies/methods to best reach them. He or she will have extensive experience in designing persuasive communications, and have consultative skills for leading projects with clients.


The position reports to the Chief Marketing Officer, and functions as a lead within the department.


Responsibilities
  • Conceives, produces, schedules and approves files, graphics, and/or illustrations for visual media, including print and the web.
  • Uses advanced understanding of printing and other production processes and of computer software for publishing, images, web sites, and various other media to produce final products.
  • Develops concepts that effectively support the departments intended goal's, messaging, and brand.
  • Consults with stakeholders/colleagues within Summer Sessions and Study Abroad as well as academic departments to plan and design presentation of visual information effectively and appropriate to target audiences and to the selected visual medium; products may include publications, brochures, displays, presentation slides, proposals, posters, web sites, and other visual communications.
  • Assesses complex or otherwise challenging written material and data and devises the best ways to present it visually to enhance its clarity and impact.
  • Develops and produces visual presentations, devising visual themes that strengthen the communication of ideas and information.
  • Works closely with project managers, writers, content experts and stakeholders to understand communication requirements, determines most appropriate media, and creates cost-effective products.
  • Prepares and gathers bids for projects, recommends printers or other vendors.
  • Effectively meet budget and time constraints; uses project management software to establish and maintain schedules and deadlines.
  • Strategizes with marketing team on creative directions and approaches; leads others in department to achieve project and departmental goals and objectives.

Required Qualifications
  • Advanced knowledge of design and communications concepts and applicable software applications, such as Adobe Creative Cloud.
  • Advanced knowledge of production processes for a variety of media and knowledge of vendor requirements for a variety of products.
  • Advanced knowledge of the campus, including its vision, mission, goals, and objectives, or ability to learn.
  • Advanced design, creative and artistic skills.
  • Advanced skills to devise broad design ideas, present them to stakeholders, and produce results on time and within budget.
  • Advanced interpersonal communications skills, including active listening skills and skills to work effectively within teams and to effectively provide advanced design advice and consultation to stakeholders on all aspects of visual communications.
  • Experience with HTML and/or content management systems a plus.
  • Critical thinking skills, advanced organizational skills and proactive problem-solving/problem resolution skills.
  • Ability to lead and mentor others in the department.

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience within the range of $85,000.00 - $95,000.00.
