General Statement of Responsibilities

Ensures the safe, accurate preparation, delivery, storage, and disassembly of skills lab exercises, experiments, visual aids, lab-ware, and computers. Oversees disposal of all types of laboratory waste in compliance with RCC, federal, and state regulations. Purchases supplies, models, media, and equipment. Maintains skills lab inventory. Facilitates the safe conduction of all phases of skills lab preparation, experimentation, and classroom demonstrations by faculty. Oversees student workers and CWE interns in proper skills lab procedures and equipment operation. Responsible for the general security of the skills lab facilities, equipment, and supplies.

Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of the Dean of Instruction, Health and Public Service. Incumbent works under the direction of the nursing faculty department chair.

Supervision is not a responsibility of this position. May oversee the work of student employees.

Examples of Duties - Essential Functions

  1. Prepares skills lab experiments/exercises while maintaining a clean and orderly skills lab environment.
  2. Assists with skills lab activities and acquisition of needed equipment/supplies to ensure adequate and safe delivery of experiments.
  3. Maintains skills lab inventory; assists coordinator with ordering and receiving skills lab supplies and equipment in coordination with other skills labs.
  4. Oversees the use, storage and disposal of flammable, poisonous, corrosive, biohazard or other hazardous materials; orients and informs staff of the nature of hazardous materials, policies and regulations governing their use and the use of safety equipment; interprets safety legislation; implements safety procedures; implements the RCC chemical hygiene plan and emergency response plan.
  5. Obtains and maintains safety data sheets (SDS).
  6. Oversees the maintenance, repair, and operations of laboratory facilities, instructional items, and equipment. Oversees appropriate installation of software and trains users on new software.
  7. Facilitates compliance in the skills lab setting with policies and procedures in conducting skills lab operations.
  8. Maintains compliance with federal and state regulations in skills lab operations.
  9. Assists faculty and oversees student workers/interns in the safe preparation, delivery, and conduction of skills lab experiments.
  10. Provides general security for the laboratory environment.
  11. Provides coordination and training of department student workers. Maintains confidentiality according to FERPA guidelines.
  12. Oversees the day-to-day operations and associated duties of the Health Professions Center central supply room.
  13. Performs other duties as assigned.
Screening Criteria

Education and Experience: An Associate's Degree with emphasis in one or more healthcare disciplines (CNA 2, LPN, Paramedicine, ADN, or other healthcare field) is required. A Bachelor's Degree in a nursing discipline is preferred. Three years' experience in a healthcare setting is required with an Associate's degree. Experience may be waived with Bachelor's Degree.

Only degrees received from an accredited institution will be accepted: accreditation must be recognized by the office of degree authorization, US Department of Education, as required by ORS 348.609. Final candidate will be required to provide official transcripts for required degree.

Any satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience which ensures the ability to perform the essential functions of the position may substitute for the requirement(s).

License: For assignments requiring operation of a motor vehicle, possession of a valid Oregon Driver's License and proof of an acceptable driving record are required. New employees establishing resident status in the State of Oregon must obtain an Oregon driver's license within 30 days (ORS 807.020 (1)). Completion of Laboratory Safety Institute Lab Safety Short Course required within 30 days of hire.

Knowledge of: Applied knowledge of the healthcare disciplines; federal and state safety regulations pertaining to skills labs; computer applications in skills lab processes; experimental design, data gathering, data analysis, and research techniques in science; skills lab equipment and supplies; hazardous waste disposal and safety procedures required.

Skills: Verbal and written communication skills; computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite ® products; technical skills; supervisory skills.

Ability to: Lift and carry up to 25 pounds. Effectively and efficiently set up and carry out skills lab experiments in an educational laboratory setting; safely manage laboratory materials and supplies; carry out procedures for materials handling and disposal that are in compliance with college, state and federal requirements; set up and carry out experiments outside the classroom consistent with the needs of the nursing and practical nursing department faculty; work independently within established policy and procedures; maintain inventories and order supplies in cooperation with skills lab coordinator in a timely way; oversee student workers; communicate effectively and respectfully with faculty, students, staff and community members; maintain up-to-date technical skills and systems knowledge while learning to use new technologies and equipment in a self-directed environment.

Manual dexterity and coordination are required for more than half of the daily work period (about 85%) which is spent sitting while operating office equipment such as computers, keyboards, and standard lab equipment. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach, bend, kneel, stoop, twist, crouch, climb, balance, see, talk, hear, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility including the ability to move materials up to 25 lbs. daily, 25-60 lbs. occasionally, and over 60 lbs. rarely. This position requires both verbal and written communication abilities.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is primarily working indoors in a laboratory/classroom environment, and is exposed to chemicals, fumes, and dirt; potentially exposed to body fluids, pathogens, and hazardous materials. The noise level in the work environment is typical of most lab environments with potentially loud equipment, frequent interruptions, and background noises. Lighting is adequate.Additional Posting Information

This is a Full-time Classified, 40 hour per week (100%) position in the Nursing and Practical Nursing departments on the Redwood and Table Rock campuses. Starting compensation is entry level for Group 5 on the 2019-20 Classified Salary Schedule.

Position is fixed-term through 6/30/2021, renewed annually, with continuation dependent upon funding. Fixed-term positions do not accrue seniority.
