Position Summary:

The Department of Neurology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) is seeking an Assistant Professor in the Tenure track. The successful candidate will be a physician-scientist with expertise in translational neurodegenerative disease biomarker research and a strong publication record. The faculty member is expected to develop and maintain an active, extramurally funded research program on development and validation of biomarkers in neurodegenerative diseases. The ideal candidate’s program will focus on early diagnosis, etiology and pathophysiology, and / or validation of novel treatments for neurodegenerative diseases. Experience in biorepository building related to human patient biospecimens including, but not limited to, blood, plasma, urine, and cerebrospinal fluid is highly desired. Ability to establish collaborative relationships with foundations and industry partners is also highly desired.
This position is part of a strategic plan to develop a Center for Neurodegeneration Research at UNC. A mission of this center is to promote translational research within the Department of Neurology and to foster multidisciplinary collaborations between existing clinical research efforts and the greater neuroscience community at UNC. The Department of Neurology at UNC is committed to building infrastructure for clinical and translational research in a broad spectrum of neurodegenerative diseases including Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s disease, and related dementias. The UNC Medical Center is a pre-eminent clinical and research institution in the Research Triangle Region of North Carolina and is dedicated to providing multidisciplinary diagnostic, imaging and treatment services for patients with neurodegenerative diseases.
The faculty member will be expected to deliver outstanding clinical care to outpatients with movement disorders. Additional clinical responsibilities may include evaluation and management of neurology inpatients at UNC Hospitals. The faculty member will also be expected to provide high-quality didactic and bedside teaching for medical students, residents and clinical fellows at UNC Hospitals. Academic teaching responsibilities will include active participation in graduate / post-graduate training efforts within the Neuroscience track in the UNC Biological and Biomedical Sciences Program.

Educational Requirements:

Applicants must have an MD or MD/PhD degree and be board-certified / board-eligible in Neurology.

Qualifications and Experience:

Competitive candidates will have previous and / or current NIH funding in the area of neurodegeneration. Applicants must be licensed or eligible for medical licensure in the state of North Carolina and be credentialed to practice medicine at the UNC Medical Center.
