The Department of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (CCEE) at The University of Alabama (UA) invites applications for two tenure-track faculty positions in the area of transportation systems engineering. Both candidates are expected to have backgrounds necessary to conduct connected, automated, and autonomous vehicles (CAV) focused research. Ideally one position will have the capacity to focus on smart communities and mobility while the other will work in the general area of freight transportation. The candidates are expected to significantly contribute to and enhance the transportation research enterprise at UA through the Alabama Transportation Institute (ATI) and associated centers, support UA’s educational mission at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and actively participate in appropriate professional outreach and service activities. Candidates will be considered for appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Expertise and interest in the following areas and how they relate to CAVs will be given strong consideration: sustainability, resiliency, planning and policy, operations, safety, human factors, rural accessibility, humanitarian and emergency logistics, drones and other unmanned delivery systems. Direct experience with operations or deployment of automated vehicles is highly preferred. Additional skills related to data mining, machine learning, simulation, econometrics, and network modeling are highly desirable. Candidates interested in and with a demonstrated record of working with related disciplines (e.g., computer science, vehicle technology, logistics, communications, economics, psychology) are encouraged to indicate how they would do so at UA.

The successful candidates must demonstrate the potential to build a robust research program through individual initiative and ability to collaborate effectively (the ability to collaborate internationally is particularly attractive). Additionally, the successful candidate will also need to indicate ideas and willingness related to supporting and expanding the undergraduate and, especially, graduate educational missions of the department, and appropriate professional service, outreach, and leadership efforts.

Transportation is one of four focal research areas at UA. ATI is an umbrella organization at UA for transportation related research, education, and outreach activities to advance a 21st century transportation system. As an interdisciplinary Institute, ATI strives to develop innovative solutions that enhance safety, improve accessibility and mobility for personal and freight transportation needs across transportation modes. ATI’s activities span the academic colleges and schools at UA and encompass several centers whose collective expertise and initiatives encompass topics across the transportation system life cycle (policy, planning, design, construction, operations, maintenance, rehabilitation, and management). Current affiliated centers and institutes include: Alabama Center for Insurance Information and Research (ACIIR), Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER), Center for Advanced Public Safety (CAPS), Center for Advanced Vehicle Technology (CAVT), Center for Efficient Vehicles and Sustainable Transportation Systems (a NSF IUCRC), Center for Sustainable Infrastructure (CSI), Laboratory for Location Science, University Transportation Center for Alabama (UTCA), and the Transportation Policy Research Center (TPRC). Resources at ATI include a co-located and jointly operated Regional Traffic Management Center in partnership with the Alabama Department of Transportation, and access to resources for research, proposal, budget and development, editorial services, and assistance with outreach to stakeholders.

The Carnegie Foundation has recognized UA with its Very High Research Activity status (formerly known as R1 status). UA currently enrolls over 38,000 students and employs over 2,000 full and part-time faculty members in thirteen colleges and schools. The College of Engineering is comprised of seven academic departments with over 6,000 students, and the College will be home to more than 150 tenure/tenure-track faculty following the current search. The College occupies well over a half million square feet of state of the art research and instructional facilities, including the $300 million Shelby Engineering and Science Quadrangle completed in 2014 and the newly reopened $22 million renovated H.M. Comer.
