The Baker Institute Advisory Board launched the Visiting Fellow Program in 2016 to foster collaborative engagement with policy experts in government, academia, other think tanks and the private sector. The Visiting Fellow Program provides candidates with the opportunity to develop a substantive research agenda at the Baker Institute with the goal of establishing a permanent research fellow position or ongoing collaboration following the program.

The advisory board visiting fellow position is a two-year appointment for an outstanding policy researcher. The position is based within one of the institute’s existing centers or programs.

The fellow will serve as a key point of contact for internal and external stakeholders including collaborative research partners, policy practitioners, organizational partners and donors. The fellow will also engage with the media, general public and various departments and groups at Rice.

Working Conditions

Standard office hours. Evening or weekend hours may be required for related events, occasional domestic and international travel, or to complete research projects.

2020 Baker Institute Advisory Board Visiting Fellow Program

Background Information

The Baker Institute Advisory Board established the Visiting Fellow Program in 2016 to foster collaborative engagement with policy experts in government, academia, other think tanks and the private sector. The Visiting Fellow Program provides candidates with the opportunity to develop a substantive research agenda at the Baker Institute based within one of the institute’s existing centers or programs. The Advisory Board Visiting Fellow position is a two-year appointment for an outstanding policy researcher. At the discretion of the institute director, the selected fellow will be provided with up to $200,000 in annual funding to cover salary and fringe benefits as well as research and travel costs. The program gives priority to candidates with the ability to find independent funding to support a permanent position at the institute.

Selection Process

The selection of the Advisory Board Visiting Fellow is led by institute director, Ambassador Djerejian, in coordination with the institute’s Board of Advisors and academic affairs director. Candidates are evaluated on their expected contribution to the research output and impact of the Baker Institute. Preference will be given to candidates with a strong potential to establish a long-term position or collaboration with the institute following the program.

Applications are due by January 31, 2020 and the successful candidate will start the visiting appointment in summer 2020.

All candidates are required to submit the following with their application:

1) Current resume or c.v.

2) Research proposal describing the candidate’s research agenda and expected deliverables (papers, events, outreach activities, etc.) for the duration of the appointment (1000 words max.).

3) Proposed annual budget for travel, research and other anticipated costs to be used during the duration of the two-year appointment.

Essential Functions

- Develops a policy research agenda using appropriate analytical approaches, models and methods
- Plans, directs and conducts research in coordination with the broader goals and mission of the Baker Institute
- Translates research results into timely and relevant public policy recommendations for
dissemination to the government, academia and private sector audiences as well as the general public
- Writes and publishes white papers, conference reports, opinion articles, blogs and policy briefs
- Facilitates collaboration between the Baker Institute and local, national, and international
organizations and experts
- May manage a team of other researchers and program support staff
- Communicates and promotes the work of the Baker Institute to the public through media appearances, public testimony, social media, and other speaking engagements
- Performs all other duties as assigned
