The Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), an internationally renowned college of art and design, business and technology, part of the State University of New York (SUNY) located in Chelsea New York City, invites applications for a Director, Employee & Labor Relations.



Job Description:


The Director of Employee and Labor Relations will provide leadership for the labor and employee relations function including preparation and participation in negotiations, interpreting and administering collective bargaining agreements, implementing human resource policies, procedures, and ensuring compliance with all other applicable legislative/regulatory requirements applicable to FIT. The Director will provide leadership, training, coaching and guidance to a team of Employee Relations business partners regarding contract interpretation and administration, planning and formulation of bargaining strategies, and effective management of all elements of policy, procedure and legislative/regulatory requirements.


  • Serves as primary Labor Relations Officer with responsibility for day-to-day labor relations management including development and implementation of strategy regarding current and emerging issues; provides VP with status updates and recommends actions within areas of position responsibility.
  • Oversees the management of employee relations and facilitates conflict resolution and problem solving, completes investigations as necessary, makes recommendations and coordinates effective solutions in alignment with applicable policies and laws. Conducts, directs, oversees and/or otherwise assists with employee relation issues and investigations and provide interventions as necessary.
  • Provides ongoing guidance, counsel, and training to administrators, managers and supervisors on meeting responsibilities as defined by the Collective Bargaining Agreements (CBA),
  • Leads the performance management, guidance and direction, coaching, mentoring, training and support for all direct reports (3).
  • Works closely with the College's external labor counsel and the Office of the General Counsel in representing the College in grievances, discipline hearings, including, as appropriate, arbitration hearings and the Public Employment Relations Board.
  • Prepares written responses to requests for information; hear, summarize and report on status of grievances investigations, draft and implement memoranda of understanding and resolutions and other labor relations actions.
  • Oversees and manage the bargaining unit position classification re-evaluation process in conjunction with the HR Business Partners.
  • Implements and monitors the use of metrics to measure success, standards, customer service and accountability. Monitors complaint and grievance process and adheres to timelines.


Requirements:


EDUCATION Degree, License, Certification


Advanced degree in Industrial Labor/Employee Relations, Human Resources, or related field, with at least 10 years of progressively responsible experience in a human resource, labor relations, employment law or related area, or equivalent combination of education and experience.


EXPERIENCE


  • 10 years of progressively responsible experience in a human resource, labor relations, employment law or related area, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in preparation for bargaining, including proposal drafting working with management partners on identifying issues and subjects for bargaining.
  • Solid understanding of all relevant labor laws, including federal, state and local labor, employment and wage and hour laws.
  • Experience negotiating, interpreting, and administering collective bargaining agreements.
  • Proven success in conflict resolution, mediation, and human resources management, related to employee relations.
  • Contract administration including full complaint management (investigation, contractual grievance, and arbitration resolution).
  • Training and experience in mediation and conflict resolutions (Preferred)
  • Experience with other HR management areas such as compensation, recruitment, organizational development, operational management, and program/project management (Preferred)
  • Experience in higher education (Preferred)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES


  • Highly effective decision-making, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, negotiation, and project management and organizational leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated experience with mediation and effective conflict resolution, facilitation and consultation skills along with a skill in fact-finding, analysis, problem solving and consulting to identify problems and recommend solutions.
  • Handle extremely difficult or volatile situations/individuals effectively
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully interpret and apply collective bargaining agreement language.
  • Willingness to assume leadership in promoting good public relations in dealing with faculty, staff, and the students.
  • Advanced knowledge of labor/employment law and the principles and techniques of labor negotiations that must be updated continually
  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality and diplomacy at all times, possess a high level of professionalism and be customer service driven
  • Capable of working independently as well as serve as collaborative team member
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office products; specifically Word, Excel, and Database applications
  • Ability to communicate with diplomacy and tact to develop positive interpersonal relationships with all stakeholders
